Hi all,

Ive wanted to build a Rally Car for a few years now and thought now would be a good time. :)

So knowing nothing about them, chassis, body size, wheels, tyres etc...…. I did a little research.

I wanted something a little bling for the chassis, but not go silly and would a touring car be able to be transferred in to a Rally Car.

So after some searching, I found a TAMIYA TB IV EVO (TRF) Brand New and thought perfect. Or would it !! so I went for it and purchased it. I must say its a cracking kit for its time, but to be fair isn't any of the TAMIYA/TRF/TB0 range.

What made me sway towards this was it shaft driven not belt. So if it was to be run (:o) open belts would not be an issue.

I have gone for the ESCORT WRC due to being a fan of R.S and having all the R.S cars from a MK2 R.S 2000 through to the ESCORT COSWORTH. This is why Im doing the COZZY....:D (Still have photos of it me in it)…. and some of the other R.Ss Ive owned as well.

I have been searching for little parts to make it special to the actual car itself rather than a chassis build. This is going to be mainly focused at the body, parts, cockpit and extras fitted to the ESCORT WRC. Then the Finished ESCORT WRC...

I went for the body from L&LModels and have to say, fantastic custom service, Quality of the body and parts, Full decal sheet, packaging and price.

I will be posting my normal pictures of the build along the way, but this wont be a normal build as I will be transferring, adapting, fitting extra parts and showing tips along the way.

Im still awaiting parts from all over the world to turn up so keep your eyes on this if your a Rally Fan...………...:thumbsup:

Cheers Lads for you kind words, this one is going to be good....:)

Alan,

Ford did go off the boil a bit with the (Hot Hatch/Performance Car) side of things. Then for a number of years they teased with the Focus RS, then released the MK1 Focus RS.

Then the big blow, for me anyway No COSWORTH engine in the Focus. But before that the Mr Duckworth and Mr Costaine who were COSWORTH pulled on Ford. Then the biggest blow was the COSWORTH Badge would end up on the biggest rival ***** SUBURA (SUBARU) ***** Yes I believe only 75 were made of the COSWORTH SUBURA (SUBARU).... In a horrible dark graphite grey... Actually it was very very nice.....

But having the MK3 FOCUS RS with a number of editions in this and still the Rumours of the FIESTA RS returning who knows.....:)

So here is the Brand New built TAMIYA TB IV EVO Chassis. I have made a few changes to the original build due to it being Touring Car, but have gone with what I think.

I have switched the wishbones around as there is 2 hole and 3 hole options for the shock positions. I wanted to gain more droop so went for the 3rd hole in on the rear and 2nd hole in on the front. I have removed the droop screws also.

I will be making tweaks here and there along away. But again is a stunning bit of kit really.

So here is the start of the build. TAMIYA TB IV EVO Chassis.....:)

With the wheels and tyres, I wanted as close as I could get to the WRC. So searching through the wheels, I went for Tamiya wheels and Tamiya radial tread tyres.

My only worry was the off set. But went with them anyway. When they turned up they were almost a perfect fit other than the fins on the inner side of the wheel slightly caught the wishbone. This was an easy fix with a slight snip of the scissors, all done.

I will be playing with the off set with the wheels once I have the body mounted.

I also went for,

MICHELIN PILOT SX (Tyre decals)
OZracing/FORD (Wheel decals)

To give the Rally finish on the wheels and tyres.

Once I have all the wheels and tyres finished, I will mount to the TB IV EVO and show pictures...

xfactor
13-04-2020, 06:12 PM
Hi Alan,

Thank you.

Wheels from JK-RC (EBAY)
Tyres from Tonys Tamiya Parts (EBAY)
Wheel/Tyre Decals from RC Decals (EBAY).

I have now finished all the wheels/tyres and mounted them to the chassis. Once I have the body cut out as I want ( not as the cut lines ) my extra add to the body. I will show what Ive done/added. I will sort the spacings.

I find all the Rally cars look like the wheels are too far in ( only my opinion on this ) so I will space to look beefy....:) I have also changed the toe in on the rear to make the wheels look good. Toe is ok for set up, but not the look...

Adding pictures of the wheels/tyres fitted now.....

xfactor
13-04-2020, 06:28 PM
So all wheels and tyres finished and decals added. I have mounted to the chassis, but will sort spacings once I have the body cut out.

So with the small transformation from Touring to Rally Car, everything is good so far.

All Ive changed up to now from Touring to Rally Car is,

Wishbone positions
Switched Wishbone around
Added 2mm droop to shocks
Changed the rear hubs Left to Right and Right to Left to remove Toe in
Removed droop screws
Wheels and Tyres

I Will try To do a rally car with my b64. Not so realistic because of the width 235mm, but it s amazing To run on trainings!!

The hardest is to find good 235mm bodies and make them hold on the chassis. On our indoor carpet TT track with big jumps, the body brackets don t last a training....but it s amazing To see, the car moves like a RX rallycross!!!

So to the main part.

ESCORT WRC Body. So the body came from L&L Models.

What you get in the box is,

ESCORT WRC Body
3D Printed Wing WRC & fixings
3D Printed Wing Mirrors & fixings
Window masks
Full decals including wind edging.

Like I have stated, Im very impressed with the quality and detail of the body. The body for me is correct around the bumpers front and rear and the bonnet vents really stand out. The front wings really pop out and the rear quarters also.... Looks stunning....:)

Ive seen some that just don't look right especially the rear bumper. I have tried to place the body on a dark surface to try and bring the shape out.

So here are the pictures of the Body.....

So after searching I found the correct colours required for the TAMIYA ESCORT WRC. TAMIYA have that many different types of paint for different surfaces and different paint codes its crazy. TS, PS, PC, LP, X, XF,...… etc,,,,,,,

I managed to trace what I needed for the WRC.

PS-4 Polycarbonate for the body
TS-15 Acrylic for the 3d wing and wing mirrors
TS-79 Clear coat semi gloss for the wing and mirrors
TAMIYA Light Grey Primer for wing mirrors and wing

Here are the cans to show what I will be using.....:)

I have done a little work today on the chassis.

I will get pictures up of what Ive done today....:)

Check these bad boys out !!!

Brembo Discs and Callipers fitted. You will notice that the fronts are as life and much larger than the rears. They actually work as in turn through the calliper (not brake). So they could be left on to run/race with. I think they look stunning....

Also anodised in TRF Blue, just by coincidence...….:D:D

Hi Alan,

The Rally Im doing is the WRCs this had a different rear wing which can be seen in the pictures. One is the box art TAMIYA, the other is a real WRCs.

I have also included the real picture of the REPSOL with the same wing, but this did have a version with the whale tail.

With the road cars ESCORT COSWORTH, there was an option wing kit which removed the Whale tail and only had the boot spoiler. This actually gave approx. 5-10mph more than with the whale tail.....:) I had the Whale Tail though....

Brembo Discs and Callipers fitted all round now.

These were a nightmare to fit as they did not fit the hubs. I had to reamer the outer rear hub/steering arms bearing hole out to allow the callipers to fit front and rear. The rear hubs and steering arms then needed drilling to take a grub screw to lock the calliper in place and hold it secure. Then the disc was fitted.

All done know though and worth the struggle.....

I started the body today. I decided what Im going to do with it. I cut to the lines other than the front bumper bottom. I left the extra and then trimmed it to allow for the little front lip. I then decided to cut/reamer holes in the little air intakes, then cut out completely the bottom grill and top grill. I will then metal mesh from the inside to give a real life look. Holes ready for the wing mirrors..

I have a alloy intercooler to fit in the bottom grill, so undecided as to either spray the grill black and leave the intercooler alloy, leave the mesh alloy and spray the intercooler black, or leave the grill off and just have the intercooler sticking through. I will see once I have the mesh.

I also plan to mesh the air intakes also. So here is the body cut out and ready for the next stage...… PAINT !!!!! :woot:

With the body shell cut out and ready for masking then painting. I thought I would prep the WRC wing and paint that.

With it being 3d printed, it has very fine lines that I wanted to rub down and try and get rid of. I used 800 wet & dry to rub it down, then the MAGICAL BIT !!!

It wouldn't be a build if you didn't borrow something from the Mrs or Daughter without them knowing you had taken it.....:D Well its a nail file buffer type thing. Ive seen them both using them on there nails to very successful results of shineyness…. Just what I needed......:thumbsup:

So I went full on and robbed it...…...:lol::lol:

I used this in-between coats of primer to buff up the primer and flatten the primer, and it really worked well...….

Here is the wing as it came from L&L Models and at the primer stage. Im now allowing to dry off over the 48hrs. Then I will paint it blue and repeat as above...…..:thumbsup:

I had the Intercooler delivered today from FORD  for the WRCs Escort. Made of real Alloy (not plastic chromed).

Once I have the mesh I will decided if I paint the intercooler black and leave the mesh silver.

Or, Leave the intercooler Alloy and spray the mesh black. ( Im Swaying to this at the moment ).

xfactor
22-04-2020, 10:04 PM
Yes Matty,

That's what I thought. Have black mesh with the silver showing behind it. But like you say, once I have the body painted up I will be able to tell better...

The bodies did sell quickly, It was the same for the REPSOL & BASTOS WRCs shells. I had watched them for a while but all seemed to sell in one night....

Im hoping L&L models will be getting more in......:)

So 2nd stage of the WRCs wing complete.

Painted in TS-15 Blue as stated by TAMIYA for this ESCORT WRCs. Its came out better than I thought and they do look better than the pictures.

Ive had a look at the drying/hardening time for this paint before the semi-gloss is applied and TAMIYA state 1 week...:woot:

So in one week I will semi gloss the wing..... This is too make sure that the drying time differences between the Blue and semi gloss do not crack the semi gloss as the two have different drying times......

Hi Alan,

I managed to find 2 sets on Ebay. I bid on both thinking I would win one, but won both.....:) Which has worked well as I have the REPSOL WRCs to do.

They are 1/24 size, so very tiny and Im thinking they are water slides....

Cockpit Painted. Im just waiting on a 1/10 fire extinguisher to complete. It will fit in between driver and co-driver.

I searched for FORD rally drivers to see the suits but couldn't find any, so I went for the colours of the Rally Car Blue/White.

I have drawn on the co drivers pad an actual Rally Map, showing the stages with the dots.... The spare wheel is stickered up along with the tyre...…...

The faces are the same, so tried to get two different faces... With the helmets, I filled the screw holes in the backs of the heads and smoothed to the shape of the head. Then painted.

Really happy how its turned out, but theres a lot of work in them...:) …..The first picture is how you receive the cockpit.....

Also the other parts came today that I needed to prep the body before painting.

For the body I was waiting the,

1. Exhaust
2. Window wipers
3. Shark fin aerial.

With these I can mark out and do the holes where needed, which with the body painted could of been a risk of making a mistake.

With the exhaust it looked too clean and crisp for a rally car, so I painted the inside of the tail pipe black to give it that run oil look.....

Exhaust as it came and after I painted it.....

Very interesting Mark...it's all in the detail...👍

xfactor
25-05-2020, 03:41 PM
Exactly Alan,

Detail is the main part of this. I have started the body and I have to say I have been putting the decals on now for almost 2 days and just have the passenger side to complete.

That will be the main part, then its down to my personal details and what I will adding.

If anyone is thinking of doing one of these here are some tips for you to gain a better finish. I must say I have painted many bodies from 1989 To today. All I had to do on this is 1 line each side the rear wings where is goes from the blue rear to white stripe. Then a decal matches and over laps to get a crisp line. So you don't need to be perfect as the decal makes the line as it will over lap the blue.

Well that's wrong, you need to be perfect as the blue comes through the white of the decal, not good. So you need to be bang on which is near impossible to do. So here is the tip.

I used white electrical tape under the white of the decal. This blocks the blue out to leave a perfect white join. Otherwise the blue shows through the white.

Rear Light decals. I was going to paint the lights in a clear orange and clear red but could only find plastic paint, then I thought maybe transparent orange and red. But in the end went with the rear light decals.

Tip, cut either horizontal at centre or cut vertical at the fold, so indicator. This means you will apply the light and indicator in 2 parts leaving a perfect flat light as thy crease trying to do in one.

I must say though, the quality of decals are fantastic, the fit of the decal and window edges are fantastic and the complete package is fantastic.

Im almost there with the decals, but I still have a lot to do so hopefully you will see the finished body by this Friday...…..

So just to let you all know.

The body shell is now finished. Ive just got to fit the cockpit and then mount. Im awaiting magnetic body mounts as I didn't want to put holes in the body and have body posts sticking through.

I have changed the plan slightly with the intercooler. Ive studied some of the real life WRCs and they don't have a mesh across the intercooler. So I have left this off. The intercoolers are either BLACK or Plain ALLOY. So Ive left it ALLOY.

I have meshed the top grille and painted that black with a FORD logo. I have fine line detailed ALL the lines that I feel were required.

Doors
Bonnet
Front grille
Rear boot
Front wings
Front lights
Bonnet catches

I have fitted,

Exhaust
Window wipers
Shark fin
Wing mirrors
Rear wing

Pictures coming shortly...…….

Fabulous detailing. How did you do the black lines and fit the exhaust?

xfactor
27-05-2020, 07:59 PM
Alan,

The detail lines are KYOSHO 0.4mm detail tape. Its mega thin. It actually looks wider than it is.

The exhaust is fitted by making the hole via a body reamer until its a tight fit. The hole actually holds the exhaust. There is a bracket to fit it and I was going to use double sided tape, but there's no need.....
