Hi All,

So theres been a delay on this build for a few weeks, while I decide which way to go on this. So I have decided.

I have been in talks with Fibre Lyte and they have made a COBRA chassis for me along with Front Tower (standard), Rear (wide) tower and mounting for ballstuds and Tower.

So I will be building a complete Fibre Lyte COBRA, little different from the start.

I have also had the other bits come I was waiting for so I will be starting this evening....

I have decided to change the ballstuds and have gone for 4-40. The reason for this is so I can use the RPM 4-40 White ballends. The nuts will be changed for the colour Purple along the way........

The FIBRE LYTE Tower, as normal is a cracking job.

I must say the front hinge pins are a little different to what I have been used to over the years, but I have been assured they don't fall out and are up to the job.

The uprights were a right pain to get in, but now all are fitted, I can actually see how good they are.....

The front axles have changed now I believe, to allow for a grub screw, so you can actually use a nyloc nut, rather than a screw. Or at least you have the choice of either...... Screw or Nut........

Again all ballstuds changed to XTMs......

Genuine New Mardave screws used throughout. Again that FIBRE LYTE Tower looks stunning......:D

Up next, the part I hate the most in any build. TURNBUCKLES.. still nursing my thumbs from the hinge pin moment.... They actually went well. With the COBRA as you will know, the turnbuckles are either black plastic fixed items or the silver metal adjustable. I had this TRF set spare and wondered if they would fit and so far so good.

The RPM white ballends went on very well and made it easy in the end for adjustment.....

With the front mounted with slotted screws and a dodgy flat head screwdriver, No scratches or slips...:)

It was time to fit yet another pair of turnbuckles and the steering assembly. Again I have changed the ballstuds for the 4-40 XTMs... Again the TRF Turnbuckles worked a treat......:)

Well next is the gearbox.

I have heard a few comments with the gearbox being the weak spot of this buggy and how it all fits, with dremeling needed for the gearbox inside and internals needing shimming and a lot of fiddling needed to run smooth.

Well having built this gearbox, I must say it went together faultlessly. I used the all New,

Mardave EVO Diff
Mardave EVO Layshaft
Mardave EVO Delrin Idler Gear
Mardave Purple Motor Plate.

With the New EVO Diff you get 3 Delrin shims, which fit inside the ballrace holes to allow for the fit of the New outdrive bearings. These require a little super glue as per Mardave instructions, but nothing major, just a drop.

The only small issue I had, was with the original COBRA Gearbox. The outdrive holes need to be enlarged due to the new EVO outdrives being bigger. Easy job with a reamer.......

So with the Rear Tower,

I wanted to fit the Top Force style wing mounts. Having searched Ebay with no joy. I messaged a member on Ebay and also on here to see if they could be replicated or the ones that were being made could be slightly modified. But sadly no reply on Ebay or On here. So the search went on, and on, and on..... Until I finally managed to get a TAMIYA Original set.....:thumbsup:

I fitted the Fibre Lyte wide rear tower to the Fibre Lyte rear ballstud mount. I am still awaiting purple nuts, but once here I will fit........

What I like about this is the extra shock holes for tuning and the tower has 3 positions to fit High, Middle and Low. I take it this is for droop. I have settled for the middle for now, this may change once we build the shocks.......:)

So on to the rear end. New wishbones and New Hinge Pins for this. I still cant get over the price. £1.35 each :woot: and I must say, they are quality. Im shocked how good they really are....

This has to be a leader in Vintage running surely. When you look at the price of,

RPM 91 Worlds wishbones at £100 plus a pair
Losi XX at around £20 for 3D printed and £35 plus a pair for Losi....

Come on £1.35 each..... :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Absolutely stunning :wub One of my favourite builds already

How tempted were you to bin the slotted screws and update to Hexs?

Aire,

Thank you for comments, I love the PURPLE against the black Carbon.... makes a nice difference to TRF blue..........:D

Dom9,

Thank you...

Yes I was almost going to change the screws, but wanted to try and keep the 90s look. But yes I almost changed the screws.

Your correct, the PURPLE and black carbon is very much like the Cougar 2 WORKS..... That is a beautiful buggy, I wish Schumacher would RE-RE it....:)

Yes the EVO is a pricey 2wd really. But for me, the Original COBRA is the one, still looks cracking today......:)

To be honest, this has cost me more than the EVO to build to this standard and getting all the parts.

xfactor
23-04-2021, 08:44 PM
Driveshafts !!!!!!

Well not much to show tonight, as I have had an issue with the Driveshafts !

Not ever owning the standard diff. I have the new EVO diff. Well I would say the outdrives do not just have a wider diameter, as with a early post I showed the gearbox holes needed reamering for the outdrives to spin free. They are longer or the diff screw/nut is bigger.

The reason I say this is that the driveshafts are now too long. You can not get up travel enough for the shocks to work, with this length of driveshaft. Which is a real shame as the New EVO diff is a nice bit of kit and really smooth.

:D:D So if your reading this Mardave. Make your driveshafts 6mm shorter pin to pin. :D:D

I have spent most the night playing around with another driveshaft and have got this to fit perfect. Along with shims and TAMIYA pink marshmellows....

I will show complete pictures tomorrow of the above to help other COBRA runners or builders........:thumbsup::thumbsup::thu mbsup:

Hi Aire,

Driveshaft (Droop)

Driveshaft.

The driveshafts are 6mm shorter than the Mardave. The Top Force shafts are a perfect fit Aire :) . They allow for complete up-travel without Rear shock fitted, so once the shock is fitted there will be no issue with up travel as the shock will not go up as far as not having the shock off.

Droop.

Droop again Aire is perfect :) I have taken a picture of the Droop showing the wishbone touching the chassis, which will be at it lowest point. Again with the shock fitted the wishbone wont hit the chassis at full droop.

TAMIYA PINK Marshmellows.

The PINK marshmellows are a what I have used for a long time. I used to use them in all my off road diffs to prevent dirt/sand getting in the thrust race. I have also used them on driveshafts and have worked perfect again on the COBRA. I got them from Ebay at .....Tonys TAMIYA Parts.....

Metal Polish.

The polish is autosol chrome polish. I think its the best metal polish out there. I used to use the tube, just like a tooth paste tube, but the liquid is better as you get to use all of it. I found the tube to split on corners and you wouldnt use all of it...

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Having got a Mardave undertray, I wanted to install it on the top without the complete tray being fitted. So having a think, I remembered the TRF503 using the TRF511 undertray but we had to cut them down.

So this is what I did. I cut the Mardave undertray in half and then trimmed it to fit under the battery boxes....

I will also use double sided tape to stick the sides to the chassis. This will then firm the sides up and I can then install Velcro to firm up the body sides once fitted. This should then stop the flapping around of the tray and body....

Hi Alan,

Bumper.

The bumper is double sided taped for now. Just to see how the fit was. I will drill and countersink if there is enough material to countersink as the screw heads are tiny compared to 3mm hex of today, so should be ok....

Undertray.

This is the design of the Undertray I believe, is to fit on top, not underneath. The reason we fitted the Undertray on top is due to cornering and effecting the handling of buggy. It also effects the ride height. We put the Undertray on top then wrap or get the clear chassis protector for the actual chassis. That way you can fit the body to the Undertray on top, it doesn't effect the cornering and the ride height isn't effected...:thumbsup:

£200 is that a reasonable price?

Looks great and the big bores will be 25%+ of the price but, yeah, still a bit too much to make me seriously consider one at the moment... The blue chassis version does, however, remind me of my youth! Good on them for doing it though. I think there are some vintage rear motor races running this year so this should sell!

My opinion is,

I think Mardave have got this spot on. Its what should of been first.

Lets look at the price back in 1991.

£99.99

Lets look at the price in 2021

£199.99

So what's the difference in COBRAS..

2021 New diff (much needed) £39.99, New Layshaft £7.95 and New Delrin Idler £7.95, BIG BORES Approx £70.00-£80.00 lets split say £75.00

Total = £130.89 for new up dated parts.

So take the £130.89 off the £199.99 New price tag, the New COBRA ECO will cost = £69.10.

In my eyes thats a bargain. You cant get a TAMIYA FROG for that.

Ok so the shocks are the bulk of the price, but leaving these out, you would search a second hand set at approx £40-£60 depending on which you go for.

Personally I think its great this has happened. Look at the likes of KYOSHO, TAMIYA, SCHUMACHER ETC.... Now Mardave. I think its great these companies are releasing the VINTAGE stuff keeping it going.

I have seen comments about the price, yes you can get a B6.2 for £70- £80 more, but remember, these REREs were the B6.2 back then.:)

You look at these when they first was released and they are all around the £100 mark more than back in day they were released.

I remember buying a TOP CAT for £79.99 from KITS & BITS Coventry in 1989-90. I bought my first RC10 TEAM for £179.99 in 1991.

Top Force EVO, Avante all come in around the £450-£500 RRP Yes they are selling for the £365-£380 Top Force EVO What were the price of these bad boys back in the day. Around the £350 mark......:)

I think (my opinion only) Its great RE REs are still coming.......:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbs up::thumbsup:

With the great weather we have had today. I had planned to paint the body, but it will have to wait a week or so for the weather to pick up.

So I decided to drill and see if I could countersink the holes. Well yes is the answer.

Bumper removed, drilled, countersunk and re carbon wrapped.....

All for my number 1 fan............ Aire............:thumbsup:

Its been a while,

But tomorrow, I will be in the garage spraying the COBRA body. Nothing to major, but trying to keep the vintage look.

All being well I will be able to sticker it up and pictures added tomorrow evening......:thumbsup:
