On a side note, I know it has different batt straps on it! I was playing about with using weighted B44 straps and the STD carbon ones. I need one carbon strap if any one can help??

Well if it was i`d be winning :woot:
Mark the way this is done is take 2 x 3Racing front towers (3mm thick)scuff up two sides using abrasive paper and bonded them together with glue in a vice, let them set together then superglued the edges and use fine grade wet and dry paper to shine up the edges it can take awhile depends on the finish you want.

Now this is the tread I'd been hoping for! Since I plan to paint a new body soon, I'd been wanting to see pics of finished cars for ideas.
My 501x...

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r119/PowerSurgePerf/RC%20Stuff/501x009.jpg?t=1265946604
Bodies: Two beaters, one brand new 501x, and one custom painted with underbelly and matching wheels. I have a 511 body coming that I plan to use, so I'd actually like to sell the new 501x and custom painted set (with wheels), so if anyone is interested, PM me. The custom painted body set has never been run, and the pinstriping is chrome. It's a pretty nice looking deal, I'm just not into green.

My 501x Worlds Edition, that piece of foam(outa a novak box) I shoo gooed to the body is to allow air to pass through the body to cool the motor.
Due to the fact I'm running a Tekin R1 pro speed control and 362 brushless motor, it gets barley warm after a heat race. Stock gearing.
I re-built the rear diff so it's butter smooth again. Front one way.
I added an aluminum steering bridge/new front shock tower to the car recently(not pictured), looks like I'll have
a bit more steering this next big race next weekend.

Nice Dave! why the belt roller and shocks on the rear? you prefer them like that?
DaveG28
17-02-2010, 09:17 PM
Belt roller is just a precaution really, these days (the 511 belts are tougher than the 501 ones were) the belts last a fair while, but I still find the rear goes before the front. The roller is just an attempt at evening up the life between the front/rear (It's off a tr415 I think!?)
Shocks on the rear are just something I'm trying to move some weight rearwards as I run so little ballast, plus I just find it much easier working on the shocks when they are back there!
One other bonus while running on flat indoor tracks, running them at the back lowers the car due to the antisquat, its super low touring style like this;)
chrispattinson
18-02-2010, 08:14 AM
+1 for shocks on the rear, I find the car much more stable due to moving the weight rearwards, without shortening wheelbase.

They look like the titanium Tamiya ones. Pricey at about $20 a pair!
I used 3 racing titanium ones, way cheaper, but not blue.
Tamiya (and others) do blue alloy ones, but they bend or snap if you look at them.

I thought the 501x worlds cars came with titanum turnbuckles?
I guess they are steel then...still I have never broke one.
Really dont feel the need to change to titanum. I guess that's
just something extra to have on the car.
I have been bending ball-studds though, but not snapping them. The head of the studd gets bent

Good choice going from a Db01 to a 501x.
I'm just guessing they drive the same since they have the same dna
so to speak.
Bet a DB01 would be great on loose dirt, since the drivetrain is sealed from debris.

I have both cars setup with exactly the same electrics and similar suspension and they still handled differently. The DB is very safe and easy to drive but as a result is less precise, The 501 is more on edge with sharper turn in and is generaly faster on a tight track. Thats why I still run them both, I can pick the car that best suits the track then alter it from there :).

I love my DB01. I wouldnt trade for for a darn thing. I even got the 511 clutch spring for both of them. Its supposedly more "accurate" in terms of setting it precisely. Cant wait to try out the trf soon though. Speaking of which...how do you guys have you slipper spring set? Mine is the 3mm Tamiya recommends but It may be too loose...any suggestions? It seems to work fine for me but Ive heard that people tighten it all the way and back out a few turns...:eh?:

Are those alloy shock caps?? :woot:
If so where do you get them?
Andy
I have no clue where to buy them. The plastic ones on the car are fine.
Alot of people dont run aluminum caps, and for good reasons.
Users point to extra stress on shock towers and causes them to crack
over a long period of use. Ive never broke a front shock tower.
But I have no reason to run aluminum shock caps either.
The big plastic bumper on the front absorbs all the stress from crashes
pretty well.

Congrates on a good purchase. I got my 511 body for my 501x WCE today.
I painted the undertray 'sprint car white' racers edge spray
The body will be a different color white, I wonder if they make
a metallic white?
The body was $37.10 at my local hobby shop, nice that the undertray comes with it.
Also they bagged some body clips(sweet) and some velcro tape. It didnt have the window masks thou?
So I guess I can masking tape the windows because I want them clear this time.

more of a detailed race report rich ? lol
Hey Lee,
Venue - Eastrax. Sandy bumpy Astro track.
Car felt "edgy" to drive until i removed inner and outer rows of spikes from the front and rear tyres. I also had to remove every other row from the second outer on the front to stop the grip roll. Luckily Nathan Waters was there to advise in that dept
I managed a second overall in round on my best run . That was the good news. Bad news is i was beaten by Nathan who had swopped to his 2WD in a 4WD heat  I think he only did it to take the pi** ;)
Theres no supplement for decent thumbs i guess
If i can get the hang of the jumps a bit better then im sure ill be ok. Very frustrating not being able to push in the mid section. Im going to try a little negative throttle expo next weekend too to try and smooth out the throttle when im trying to keep it under control over the jumps. I was running 19/87 on a sp 5.5R in the end.
It does a feel a bit like you are crawling when cornering compared to TC ( aside from the straight of course ). Im not quick enough to catch the grip roll if i push any harder sadly. If i push that extra 5% then it always bites me before the 5 minutes is up
Really enjoyed it though and aside from one driveshaft popping out, the car took some serious battering when i kept screwing up the jumps. I have moved the rear diff to the low setting to help with driveshaft plunge.
Really pleased with it mate
Dan took a video of the final here if you are interested. Im the idiot who screws up the jump as usual.
Nathan on pole.

Hey Rich, I've recently started using -50% on the throttle, and it's a LOT easier to be smooth, and you still have the power at the top end when you need it.
And you're right, corner speeds are a lot slower, once you acknowledge that and use more brakes it gets easier too :-)
I still reckon off-road is way harder than touring car!
And the 511 is ace - what setup did you use?

" I still reckon off-road is way harder than touring car! "
Agree 100% with that. Certainly much harder than my local club anyway !
As for setup, i used Hupos setup from the TRF site with the folllowing changes
Tamiya Blue springs front and rear
Associated 30wt rear
Associated 35wt front
-2 camber front and rear
zero toe ( by eye )
std shock seals with HL cylinders and gold shafts.
Everything else the same as far as i can tell.
If you can or anyone else can see anything there that might be worth changing for the track in the video then please shout !

I highly reccomend it!
The old 501x body looks cool and futuristic and stuff, but
the 511 body looks better and more like a B44 style body.
I dont have the shocks on it because I drained them out and cleaned them for storage, as the car

I remember when the 501x was first released. I couldn't wait to get my hands on one. I hadn't raced at club level in many years but once I bolted in a 5.5 turn I headed for my closest race track to join in on the fun.
It was a real learning experience for me and a whole lot of fun.
Anyway here are some of the paint jobs Ive been responsible for. The Azarashi body is my last and current lid and in my opinion the best lid you'll find for the Tamiya.

Wow! nice paint jobs!
What I like about the 501x is it's optimized for nimh cells.
The 511 is better suited for Lipo thats the only difference I see between them.
The 511 they made a little bit different shifted the cells forward that kinda thing.
I put a B44 battery tray with the thumb screws in my worlds edition 501x.
It fit perfectly, I was surprized. That is what look I wanted for my 501x,
and the 511 body fits on my car perfectly the
thumb screws have about an inch before they touch the body, so
I still have plenty of room in my car. Now to get it on the track this
winter and i'll surely give you guys some insight.

Yeah. If I timed it perfectly, I could almost get it to wheelie the entire straight - that motor goes!
My laptimes where a few tenths slower actually and the car a lot harder to drive, so I bolted in the SP V3 5,5T again and geared it a bit higher and found it much easier to drive.
I did however get the first chance to really crank up the timing on my 9,5T in the 201. All I can say to that is wow...

got mine from fybre lyte, dont know if I would go up to 6mm you might bend the alloy:p
Mark the way this is done is take 2 x 3Racing front towers (3mm thick)scuff up two sides using abrasive paper and bonded them together with glue in a vice, let them set together then superglued the edges and use fine grade wet and dry paper to shine up the edges it can take awhile depends on the finish you want.

yok big bores hey, how are they on the 502x?
discostu
08-01-2012, 11:18 AM
with the big bores the car feels more planted it is much better on the big jumps and stays flatter on the ripples they are direct fit and as an added bonus the shock shafts are the same as the trf shocks and they look the nuts.
and also the rear shocks use shorter springs so no more cutting coils off to get ride height.
