That sounds good , can you get light weight astro ?

Be dam expensive .

Dkfream 17-06-2015 11:16 PM

I priced Astro for my garden and the really cheap stuff which is quite naff but would be ok to race on is around £10 per square meter

Dkfream 17-06-2015 11:22 PM

6mm astro on eBay 4mtr wide/ 12mtr long £192, reckon you would need 4 rolls to cover floor ish, so about £800 !!!!!!

That's not bad .

chrispattinson 18-06-2015 07:21 AM

It's need to be the right kind to race on. There's astro, and there's astro.

Personally, I don't mind the slippery carpet .... bear in mind at Silverstone club on astro, it's possibly a new set of tyres per race night.

DAVO 18-06-2015 08:47 AM

Astro would be good

Andyp 18-06-2015 09:05 AM

Astro is light weight, it's just when you put the sand in obviously you wouldn't put the sand in for indoor use,

As Chris said it has to be the right stuff, Silverstone and I think southport indoors use astro, maybe someone could contact them if it's serious idea

I don't think £800 is too bad, as mentioned new carpet or even 2nd hand would be a lot more or around the same price. Depends what sort of situation the club is with £££s but it would make the club pretty unique.

As for tyre wear, I haven't raced for a while but I don't get much more than one meet out of a set on the carpet we have now

Something to be thought about I guess

Its one set of rears per night at the moment at seaham. for me anyway

chrispattinson 18-06-2015 12:41 PM

The benefit of our unique slippery carpet, is it allows a 13.5 motor to be competitive and get 5 meeting out of a set of minipin tyres.

I can see that others using bigger motors have higher tyre wear, but you dont need the big motor to be competitive.
High bite astro will mean you need bigger motors, and bigger tyre wear.

Just my thoughts.

Bring back the slippy floor with bits of carpet here and there!

DAVO 18-06-2015 01:39 PM

A think the Astro would be good and if it's grippy as heck tires would wear faster but they would also still work ok even when the tread is quite low. It's a case of trying to get rid of grip instead of trying to get more grip on the buggy.

An idea may be buy one roll use it with the carpet will give varied surface and if it's good the rest can be bought saves buying the full lot and worrying if it's no good

I deffo like the idea of Astro though

if every one was using 13.5 surly it wouldn't matter what surface we was on, I'm abit out of touch but is they many use 13.5 @ the club?

There was a post about carpet used for large areas and of cuts

derek mc 18-06-2015 06:08 PM

carpet/ astro

we use 4 metre wide rolls of astro at southport, it is 30 mtrs long and very heavy. best bet is to look for 3mtr width but it will still take 4 people to lift it. try asking on the 12th section section about carpet they will be able to direct you to a good sauce, we got some 2 mtr. carpet several years ago and it was cheaper (and lighter) than astro. Asfor tyre wear we found Schumacher yellow blocks lasted best and gave good grip on astro indoors, especially when used with our stock class 10.5 motors. let us know how you get on.
