Looks like a standard grasshopper 2 to me, a current model:

£89 new, so worth what one one will pay for it used.
These sorts of cars new are a kids first kits to build on their own or with a parent, which i guess is part of their appeal.

Grasshopper

I might have got this wrong but the kit number on the box 58074 was released in 1988 and stopped in 1995 so don't think it is the one which is being sold now

for what it's worth, it looks to me like the original. it has the original oblong ceramic resistor on in the back "window" which was used with the 3-speed mechanical speed controller as i recall...

my first buggy...

in fact f you zoom in on the image, you can make out the mechanical speedo, and the acoms techniplus 27mhz radio also dates it...

Tamiya are selling a lot of rerelease items, which are slightly improved and/or slightly changed in order not to ruin collector item prices. The new versions don't come with mechanical speed controllers anymore and decal sheets have been changed to avoid copyright issues, e.g. you will most likely not find any real-life cigarette, oil and tyre brands anymore. I'd definitely say it's original. As already pointed out the ceramic resistor, proper branded decals, and number on the box are all giveaways.

I thought those techniplus radios were such an advance back in the day with the LED power indicator rather than the analogue dial

Pop it on eBay mate. Big audience for vintage Tamiya on there.
