GB-02 front suspension mod
 

I've had two months to play with my GB-02 Buggy Champ. Haven't done much with it that Jimmy hadn't tried in his review. You can read about mine at http://www.bigbigplanet.com/rccars/gb02

I did the 630 ball bearing suspension mod just as suggested in Jimmy's review which really helped free up the front suspension. I had some extra Tamiya TL-01 hingepins lying around so while I had everything open, I did some quick measurements and found them just a tiny bit longer than the stock GB-02 suspension pins, so I used them to get a bit more camber and width on the buggy.

Thanks. I love the buggy. I'm done modding it. It's not the fastest on the carpet, but it's no slouch neither and it's hassle free RC. It follows us shopping (indoor track at one of the shopping centres), to family outings, to the park, on road trips, etc and I never do anything to it now other than charge the batteries.

yes, I agree, great appeal as a "set it and forget it" type of car... although I've managed to break 2 GB-01 front A-arms... :bored: GB-02 has been pretty solid.


I have to ask. On your link site, it says for widening the front track width you used pins from a "TL-01"?? Did you by chance mean "TT-01"? I was at a store today looking through parts and saw TT-01, but no TL01? :eh?:

I used TL-01 hingepins (they call them suspension shafts). Tamiya part # 53301

But you got me curious, so I just looked up the downloadable TT-01 manual and they don't use hingepins with e-clips, but an even more primitive method (step screws).

But, the step-screws is not the problem. I saw some TT-01 pins mad by "Square R/C Sustain", a Japanese R/C mod part company, and they use E-clips, and seem very nice quality, but, the bad part is they are too short for GB-02. :mad:

I just bought a GB-02 front end kit (#40551) for an old broken Hornet GB-1 I have too... freshen her back up... have to find some of those TL-01 pins for both the cars now.

The time has come, I'm going to try these little mods to my own GB-02.

So, I have to ask, was it the Tamiya 630 bearings you used? I couldn't find a dimension for those. are they 3X6X2.5mm?

I think I'll hold off on the Hitec metal gear servo for a bit though... at least until I decide to try out some larger "Sedan" wheels or something like that....

Yup, the 6X3X2.5 are 630 bearings. I just got some cheapo brand ones.

The stock servo really wasn't bad at all. On hindsight, I might not have needed to swap it for the Hitec, even after the servo saver upgrade.

excellent, thanks for the confirmation.

About the servo... might be a nice idea for when trying to run 1/10 scale wheels and tires on these TTG's... the bigger heavier tire/wheel would probably put a lot of stress on the little plastic parts.
