I've used both Schumacher medium and Kimbrough large on my Cougar 2 and neither seems strong enough to stop wheel wag, prior to these I never ran one but did snap a few bell cranks, so what are people using and how effective are they?

I only run the x4 ring Xray servo saver. Xray do do a x3 ring as well. Its expensive but excellent. Super strong and does the job perfectly. I wont use nothing else. Used them on the Cougar 2 and Top Force. I have put one on my Avante to use also.:thumbsup:

Another problem with the Cougars is the single front bearing. This gives massive play/wobble. Back in the day there was 2 modds we did.

1. Schumacher double bearing modd. 2 bearings instead of 1.

2. Fit Associated castor blocks and axles. To run the Associated RC10 wheels with double bearings.

Yeh I'm running the u815 twin bearing mod, and everything was good whilst I was direct but the bearing bell cranks aren't particularly easy to come by, so I went to the saver but the amount of wheel wag I get I'm really contemplating getting rid of it altogether. Have you a part number on that xray saver?

Is it XR372502? The 3 ring ending 503?

And your not wrong it is expensive!

That's the one Neil for the x3 ring. Add another pound on for the x4 ring.:thumbsup:

Associated do AS7138 for under £5 it's 3 ring but I'd rather take the advice and get the Xray 4 ring. If you think there worth it?

Cheers for the advise on the servo saver it worked an absolute treat, car was great fun to drive and bar a layshaft bearing locking was maintenance free for the most part, now for the next question? I know the diff spring on the modern stuff goes on the nut side but is this true for the spring washers in the cougar diff, I can't see them in the manual and apparently I'm currently missing them.

Depends on the diff you are running. I only run the pro-diff. This does not have springs or washers.

The pro diff only has the lock nut on one side and the other side just the screw and thrust washers.

Are you running the cougar/club 10 diff ?

Just looked at the Cougar 2 Team & Works instructions.

Just looked at the Cougar Club 10 instructions.

Both pro diff and club 10 diff are built in the same way. There are no washers/springs on either.

Just alloy outers on the pro diff and diff washers.

I think it's the pro diff, white plastics, alloy outdrives, circular diff rings (not trilobe), I thought it was strange to have them missing and not to be in the manual, but then when they came in the diff nut and screw kit U847 I wondered if they'd been an oversight.

U847 are front wishbones Cougar 2.

According to the cougar 2 parts list,

U857A is (Screw, Locknut, Cover : 23mm Diff). No mention of washers. I have built a few Pro-Diffs :lol: and never come across washers for the diffs.

Unless someone else knows of them. I never have matey.....

Oops wrong number! I knew there was an 8 and a 7 in there somewhere:lol:. There's definitely 4 dished washers in the parts bag I've just bought, but it's not a problem I actually thought it was a new thrust race before I looked closer.

The disk sprigs are supposed to keep the diff set, I can't remember if I've put them in my pro diff or not it's been that long!
They sit on the screw before the thrust race like this )()( again I can't remember if there was another washer at the top :confused:

Yeh there's 5, so it would be ()()( , are they actually needed or? I've not got them in at the minute but there in the bag as if they should be?

Hey neil the pro diff doesn't need the spring washers they supply them in the bag for the earlier diffs eg procat Topcat mk1 cougar etc.

Guess it was just easier than having 2 different part numbers and 2 different bags to pack
