Given that OP has lots to learn already, I don't think adding RAW processing into the mix would be a good idea. At most I would suggest RAW + JPG option, at least then there is a JPG ready to use...

8 x 1.5v is 12v anyway, but with NiMh cells the nominal voltage is 1.2v so you are unlikely to get 12v.

I use NiMh cells in my son's tx and it usually reports about 10 -11v .

If so, your cells might be dropping below this on load, even though they are above voltage off load.

4400 mAh cells should last 10-15 minutes...
