The clamping hexs will stop the hex being clamped onto the bearing but you still have slop between the hub bearing and the pin and this will make the bearing fail.
Shims are cheap and they solve the problem, ask Jim76 on here, he had the binding problem last sunday and i didnt.
Big Edit, just to be clear the shims should be on the stub axle between the bearing and the back of the hex

Not on mine it isnt. Its the hexes binding on the hubs when done up tight as the drive pin is pushed into the plastic hex. So i fitted alloy clamp hexes, problem solved and i can do up the wheel nuts tight now with no binding.
