My YZ2 is the original 4 gear laydown transmission which I use for dry or high traction conditions with the shocks on the front and a gear diff.
I actually have a complete second gearbox (bought used off of here) with a ball diff installed and shock tower stand offs on the rear. I use this for wet or low grip conditions. I just have to remove the shocks, undo 6 screws from underneath, 2 from the top and the 2 motor screws and swap gearboxes. I also swap to the 3.5 degree toe in for low grip.
If I only had the choice of 1 gearbox for this car, the 4 gear laydown would be what Id use. 4 gear gives more weight transfer (most usefull in the wet) and is therefore the best compromise. The goldilocks situation would be 4 gear upright (Y-Max) and rear shocks for low grip and 3 gear laydown and front shocks for high grip.
