Our race format on Saturdays is 4 x 5min heats followed by 5 minute finals. Hard case lipos are essential. We run 2WD and 4WD 1/10th scale buggies. The majority run 2WD as they require less maintenance.
We run the RC3 decoder so the 2 wire transponders are compatible. There are ones from AMB called 'Harry' which most people use. They are nearly £100 now but there are 2nd hand ones out there. MRT also do transponders which are cheaper but I have not tried using one of these. We do have a loan transponder you could borrow for your first couple of races to save you spending out all at once.

www.dmsresults.co.uk to see what cars people run. My advice would be to go or an Associated B6.1 as this works well and there are a large number of racers who use this buggy and could give you advice.
Marshaling is compulsory for the race after your own race unless there is a medical reason for you not being able.
