It depends how you're working, you can key the shell up which will aid the adhesion of the paint and therefore you should be able to mask over it to protect it without fear of it peeling off.
Or you can cut the mask and lay the whole thing down and then remove the darkest colour first and spray and work in dark to light sequence up to white. You should be okay then but it depends on the design ?
Liquid Mask is easier for big area's and bolder type designs.
Cut film is good for logo's and details. It's not quick though.
