Another option is to have a play with DS Mechanical, it is a cutdown version of Spaceclaim which i use, i find it a lot easier to use than solidworks.

You can download DS Mechanical for free from here scroll down the page and you will see links for the 32bit & 64bit versions, and further down are getting started tutorials etc.

I have not installed DS Mechanical but the key thing to check is if you can save a item as a STL file format if you want to print on a 3d printer or get someone like shapeways to make the item.
