The firmware is like the operating system on a PC. The Hobbywing ESC the clones are a copy of uses the equivalent of Windows 8.

The clones come with the equivalent of XP, the firmware in them works fine but by 'upgrading' the firmware you get all the extra functions and performance of the ESC that was copied.

You then have different versions of the firmware, just like Windows 8 is available in home, pro, enterprise versions depending on the requirements and hardware.
So if you are running a low turn motor (under 10.5 turns) you use the modified firmware which works best with those motors. If you are running a higher turn motor (10.5,13.5, 17.5 turns) then you load up the stock firmware which gets more speed out of those motors, but that firmware will overheat a low turn motor.
