As a side note, do you use "Lazy Goo", it water proofs everything very well. If you don't have any yet get some ! Well worth it for the price.
I'm not saying it would have sorted your issue out this time, that sounds like the speedo failing, not your fault, maybe a manufacturers thing ??? Do they not offer warranties or anything you can go back to them with. Even the cheap ones of these ESC's are a fair bit of cash, surely you must be able to complain ?
