Kyosho 8th, tapered hole shock pistons
Nick Caro has asked me about these, has anybody tried the new IFW405 (-128, -138, -148) tapered pistons in their 8th buggy? Particularly the MP9 but these will fit any big bore shock.
They look very good, and I hear aid smooth shock movement with good damping from large jumps. Im yet to try them, will be ordering them soon but intrigued to here is people have tried them already and in what sizes. The Kyosho new parts page is http://www.kyosho.com/eng//products/rc/np0903.html (but the photos are not live). |

Hi Chris,
I'm currently running the 1.2 really like these on the car. I know few ppl are running either 1.3 or 1.4 but i never tried them tbh I find they make the car better on damping over jumps & make the car little more stable. Think you need to try them see what you think of these. One of the guys we race with didnt like how the car felt running these he now running kit pistons.

Hi Rob,
Im loving my car on kit pistons. Haven't tried anything else though. Id still like to know what the kit hole sizes are so I can achieve similar sort of damping on the tapers.... therefore I have ordered 2 packs of each size, so I'll just have to sit and play at my bench until it feels right.... |

Hi Chris,
What sizes have you gone for? I believe when me & colin checked mine (maybe wrong) but the kit pistons i had was 1.6x8. It looks like i wont be running this weekend due to transport issue but it cant be helped. Might try get to Deerdale do some testing with these tire compounds & few setup changes. Is Nick up & running yet?

hi guys not done that much testing with them, but they are better off big jumps/ more pack, and are abit more damped in the corner, i mainly run the 6 hole pistons, unless its very low grip, where i run 8 holes

Hey Butch, I think all the tapered pistons are 8 holes. Nowt stopping us glueing 2 holes up I suppose, Ive got some ordered so will have a play - won't be glueing any up though.

i run them in the d8
8 hole tapered 1.3 with 450f 500r edit oils. the car feels more planted on landings and over the skitty fast bumps as it can get its wheels back down quicker...the car seems to pop off the jumps a bit better too. |

Generally i use 1.3 x 6 (old 777 pistons acutally). but on tracks like DXR harper adams the 1.2 x 8 are good.. not really tested the tapered pistons much, but would imagine you would get more pack coming off a jump.
1.3x6 pistons are really good from what ive tried. hope this helps gurdy

Ive rebuilt the shocks, and done them as follows:
Front: IFW405-128 with Losi 32.5wt oil, Blue spring. Rear: short rear shocks IFW405-138 with Losi 27.5wt oil, Green spring. On the bench this feels a little softer than it was before, which was 37.5wt in front, 30wt in rear with kit piston setup (I still have no clue to the sizes, just that one end were black, the other end were white). If I drop the buggy from 1ft, it does have good shock pack. This ought to feel great around the track!!! Does anyone else find the Kyosho shock boots hold too much pressure? I tried puncturing mine without success. I might file a groove in the shock rod end so air can leave there. |

I dont run them on my car never have, just for this reason & i feel it restricts travel on your shocks but thats just me.

I think they're a good idea, as the shocks stay clean underneath - but they could be better in the pressure they hold.

Hi Chris,
I think the standard kit pistons in the MP9 SE are 1.2 x 8 front and 1.3 x 8 rear. When I've ran the tapered pistons they were good, but so are the standard straight holed pistons. As Simon said, the 1.3 x 6 hole all round are a good starting point, when I was testing with Rob over at Deedale last weekend I ran the following:- Front 1.3 x 6 with 450wt Kyosho Oil and Blue springs Rear 1.3 x 8 with 400Wt Kyosho oil and Green Springs The car had enough pack to handle the big jumps there, but was also able to soak up the smaller ripples and bumps too. Hope that doesn't confuse things for you As I mentioned in a previous post, if we ever meet up at a meeting you're more than welcome to come and try out pistons/springs etc; I've got plenty you can try out. Colin

I can vouch for the Kyosho 16mm tapered pistons.
I ran 1.3mm 8 holes in the rear with 27.5wt oil. 1.2mm 8 hole in front with 32.5wt oil. Finished 2nd at Pendle today. |
