Well that settles things then, for the time being at least.
Its time to get drastic with Goshen.

goshen is getting busy . its had a spruce up allredy to keep it going this year but with all the new members and the club growing nicely its seems worthwhile to do some work over winter/spring. might take a bit more than a few tubs of paint and a bag of cement this time though.
but we got a nice little club going at the min . happy days

Basically the current master plan is lets give Goshen a major revamp. All the feedback we are getting suggests Bury council can't afford to be moving use for at least the next 2 years so we need to do a lot more than a coat of paint this time:
1) Level 1 We need to lift sections of the astro, smooth out the joins and relay. Cost - a lot of time, about a ton of sand and a few more nails. Maybe patch up the holes in the turf sections at the same time. 2) Level 2 New astro. Well new isn't likely, but new to us. The problem of the joins sinking is made worse by the fact Bury track is a patchwork quilt of little bits of astro - some new big strips would go a long way. Whilst we are at it we could sort out the drainage. Cost - Even more time, a lot more sand (and shingle for drainage) and whatever we can get astro for. 3) Level 3 Total remodel. Start again from scratch. This need not be done in our current location - we could volunteer to move to another spot in Goshen Park, and start work there. Cost ££££££ but still less than an indoor dirt track...... Any of these is possible given the right support - though level 3 is a bit drastic right now. What we really need is commitment, and skills. Even Level 1 is a big job. We need people who can run diggers, haul heavy loads, scrounge/steal/swindle some astro, sand, cement -whatever. So its time to make use of our clubs members skills, contacts, and in Jony's case generally dodgyness to get the job done. Basically Bury Needs You!

I remember seeing a post on Oople some weeks ago about a load of spare astro turf available from North Wales. It was free but transport was required. Maybe there is still some available and enough for Goshen? I have had a brief look through the oople general forum but cannot find the thread. Maybe someone will have better success at finding it?

Take up existing Astro
Within site curtilage dig a pit say 3x3 m and fill with stone (this will act as a soakaway) Lay land drains from the point that collect water (low point) running to the soakaway Land drains being basically perforated pipes burried in a trench Re-shape track/jumps as required with some good grading(smoothing) with the back of a machine bucket Cover the lot with new Astro turf(donated or whatever) Cost? Machine for a day with driver say £250 Stone and pipes say another £250 Astro new around £500 should do it - hopefully second hand Basic solution improved by laying 500mm minimum of stone across the whole of the the track for netter drainage (prob not too necessary as when it's wet often people don't race) Total cost around 1k If drainage Is not a concern then just a regrade with a machine n new turf would do I'm guessing bmbc has some funds available? |

Just some tips guys:
Astro is WELL expensive, even 2nd hand - even if it is free haulage is expensive as it is heavy. Why does Bury need re-modelling? I still class it as one of the best tracks in the country. IMHO it just needs a little work to smooth out the astro joins and a little freshen up, not rebuilding. You have a good track already! G

New astro is ~£1k for 100 square meters.
2nd hand astro ~£1k for ~300 square meters, about 30/40% of the Bury track? The Bury astro is good, it holds the and well, I wish I knew how it did You don't need any big machinery in my opinion, just men and time. That is unless you want to rip up what's there, but I see no reason to, the track is great and many clubs would love to have it I know how much time it takes to build a track guys, a long long time G

i nthink somewher in beetween is right . it defo needs work. but i agree with northy. its a ace track it doesnt want remodelling much just refitting and what have you.
drains and sand/aggregate is agod idea if the astro is coming up though. any work is good work in my book . glad to see the club progressing

Most of the astro is fine, except that the joins resemble trenches! Some sections though won't survive being lifted as they have a substantial amount of plant life growing through them (ie full of holes) so I suspect a small amount of astro might be needed for patching.
No - the problem is under the astro. The sand has compacted so hard over the years its like concrete, which means the drainage is terrible. Mix that with the grass sections and it becomes muddy real fast, and takes forever to dry out. We need to do as Shanks suggested under the astro - we can re-lay the old stuff on top to save money. Don't move the concrete or the grass (except to patch up a few divots) so it will still be the same basic track, but without the massive joins, the muddy patch before the brick bend and the massive puddle just before the sleeping policemen..... Basically Graham we would like to take Goshen back to being the national standard track it once was. Not sayng we would want to host a national, just that we'd like to be capable of it......
