Possibly marketing - sell us more stuff for our kitchen init.

Its like spoons, having all these funky shapes and sizes - when a shovel will do fine for all pupuses.

You can get glass that would handle the heat no problem. Hence glass mugs do exist. So strength is not the issue. Granted most normal ones won't be the best option.

Ceramics though are natural insulators. Will keep your hot drink hot, that is the main reason for using a ceramic mug rather than a glass or anything else.

Totally ignoring any traditions of drinking tea you will find some nice tea glasses here:http://www.neckermann.de/index.mb1?mb_f020_id=dS1TfxxywJpIo6Qb_dVVA_QaLjDWP aj9&nav_id=36254249&vkh=0462&wersch=15541&link_id= zUoJIh5UH7rxVIvpHD63W1sHDjDQD7&ct=1

Do your history.

Glass was not invented when mugs were. Mugs were used way back and they were made of a type of clay. However for more info they put milk in first so that the hot water didnt crack the mug, hence why milk was introduced into tea. The best methods tend to stay, and why change something that has worked perfectly for centuries.

Mark:They hadn't invented sand over here to make the glass but they did have clay.

Does anyone care?
