Default Leaky gear diff

Just wondered if anyone has had the same issue with the KF2 gear diff? Mine seems to be leaking a lot of fluid from where the screw heads sit. I have rebuilt and ensured that there is the correct amount of oil in the diff, but it still leaks.

Cheer,

Alex

I have several Schumacher gear riffs and never had this issue. Can you check and confirm a couple of things though? It sounds as if both halves of the diff casing aren't touching together. Is the mesh of the gears inside the diff at all tight? Can you also check you are using the correct holes for the three screws that hold both halves together? It is possible to be using the wrong holes which will cause the screws to be not central.

The mesh of the gears seems perfect and it fits together nicely. Using the right holes as well, there are 4 screws on this particular diff. Using 2 orange seals around the outside of the diff, would this affect whether the diff oil would come out of the diff by the screw heads?

Sounds about right to me. There a four screws on every Schumacher gear diff, they're all the same. Either side of the correct holes for the screws are another hole which isn't quite central to the screw hole, if you try and use these you will have issues.
You could strip and clean the diff and then maybe with a white marker pen colour in one half of the diff casing where they should touch together and see if they are actually touching. If you have it engineers blue would be the best for this.
How old is the car? Maybe worth speaking to Schumacher, especially if you brought it new and recently. Maybe you have a defective diff casing with some porosity, get a new one.
Could you post some pictures of the diff built and stripped?

It sounds like you might be over filling it the oil shouldn't come above the centre gear cross shaft.

i see the other holes but definitely in the right ones, there wouldn't be much chance of getting the screws in the others. I've always filled it to the recommended level just so the drive pins are covered. It lasted a meeting at Silverstone last Tuesday, and then 2/3 runs into the BWOC warm up it had leaked pretty bad, rebuilt and it lasted 2 runs until it did the same.

Just rebuilt and made sure everything fits together nicely with no stripped screws etc... Put a small amount of PTFE tape around the screw heads as they sit into the casing to see if that improves it. Doesn't leak at all from around the gear or the outdrives.

Failing this, I'll probably just buy a new casing and give that a go.

Thanks for the pointers!

Could have been over-tightened in the past and distorted the plastic.

The casing may be cracked if diff oil has managed to spill into the screw holes, and the screws then tightened.

If this is a recent kit make sure that the screws that hold the diff halves together are 8mm not 10mm otherwise they'll bottom out before the diff cases are nipped together like mine did. This was the issue on my k2 diffs causing oil to leak passed the screw heads.
