But what's happened to the 'Cobra Evo',it's dissapeared...

not sure but the parts will be there to convert an old cobra so maybe worth bagging 1 off ebay for pence like i did.

I'd be amazed if they bring out a bunch of new parts but not a full kit. Surely the Cobra Evo is coming. Just about all the new stuff is for the Cobra http://www.mardave.co.uk/recently-added.html .... It has to be coming... Maybe

Do like I did with mine,ditch the crappy Cobra gearbox and fit a Mad Rat 'box.

Way smoother,way quieter,miles better slipper and diff.
Mine handles big power and goes very well now.

There are issues with both the diff and idler gear. You can reinforce the idler with a 1mm drill bit and fit a rc10 b4 diff in the standard gearbox with the help of a dremel. Neither job is difficult and then you have a strong and reliable gearbox. The problem is that once you do this and end up with a good gearbox, the driveshafts will wear out or the roll pins will snap or fall out of them very quickly. The thing to do here is to fit tamiya dog bones. I forget which ones fit but I think it's the front off a manta ray or terra scorcher. None of these mods are expensive and I have ran mine competetively with a 6.5 and 65c lipos and its never broke.

I wouldn't have a clue mate. I used a heavily modified cobra about 4 years ago and was in touch with mardave at the time. I spoke to Chris at mardave back then and as I understood it, to complete the new car a diff was being designed and a new gearbox case. The diff was basically cobra diff halves modified to accept associated diff rings and thrust bearing. I sent Chris gurnellrc's details for assistance with a new gearbox case but that was some time ago so I have no idea how it was left. I still own my cobra and its a real one off. I did get it to go well and I also played with a mid motor version I made recently.

To all you other Cobra drivers,either do like Adey did and fit a B3/B4 diff,
or do like I did and fit a complete Mad Rat gearbox.

Whichever you do,it's a worthwhile conversion making things far smoother,
quieter and the ability to run Associated spurs(either use a B4 slipper or turn down the Ansmann slipper plates to 30mm)
but most of all,you can use hot wind brushed motors(like me) or a nice hairy brushless(like Adey does).

Couple those mods to some other changes such as a B3/4 steering rack
(mine has a Durga jobbie),the weak shock mounts(mine has an alloy rear
and a B3 composite front)and some decent shocks.

If anyone wants pics of mine's gearbox or any other tweaks I've done then give me a shout.

Personally,I think you'll wait a long time for a modded 'box from Mardave,
their 1/12th scene is priority for them.

I been a busy boy Migggers. I work on it when I can these days. I am in need of a new chassis to finish it as the one I had I drilled slightly wrong. The gearbox with an external idler is done and I used centro c4.1 lipo holders, posts and battery strap to keep the lipos on place. Cobras are a rare sight these days and are not really the preferred choice for the vintage racers. It's a shame really because if you sort the reliability issues the car has, it makes a surprisingly good car. I truthfully do hope Mardave revamp the cobra and release the evo version but I really doubt they will. I suppose if mardave felt there was enough interest in it they might. Who knows.

I see then that you're using Associated bits too,I think it's the way to go
with a Cobra,much better quality than Mardave bits.

I'm looking for a B3 nosepiece,hinge pins and front arms for mine at the mo.

On the Cobra Evo front,I really do think you're right.If we were hearing of a developement
car being tested on some of the UK tracks at the bigger events to gauge response and
whet appetites,then fair enough.

I don't think Mardave can retail it in the right price bracket either.
£50-£65 gets you a Mad Rat or Monkey kit and for an extra £15 a set of
cheapo threaded shocks.
Bung in a second hand brushless,you're pretty much club competative
right out of the box.
£80-£100 gets you a tidy second hand B4/well set up Rat/Monkey.

If Mardave are going to pitch the Cobra Evo in at £100-£120 without
tyres,radio gear,motor etc,I think that's a lot of loot for what is a
virtually untested no race pedigree basically vintage buggy.

Not many are going to buy it at all

Hey guys after a while racing full size cars I've decided to come back to something that won't bankrupt me.

So this winter I've decided to rebuild the Cobra and have a few q's


I will be calling Fybrelite for some Carbon towers but can anyone recommend some good aftermarket shocks to replace my cheapo threaded ones?

also do we know if the transmission parts on the Mardave site are the upgraded versions that are brushless friendly??

Finally will the cobra battery tray fit a lipo battery in??

Firstly. Most modern shocks are pretty good and often there are sets for sale on here or eBay. Just make sure the seals are ok and the shafts are straight. Most brands like tamiya, losi, associated etc are perfect. Be aware that with aftermarket shocks you will need to order the right front shock tower from Fibrelyte as the standard mardave front shocks were quite long. Fibrelyte do various front and rear towers for the car. A lipo should fit just fine. The main issue is the transmission. You can modify it to handle brushless but it depends how good you are at modifying parts too fit inside the standard gearbox. You can also consider a complete gearbox swap but because the rear wishbones and rear tower bolt onto the gearbox, that's not always that easy. Personally I would stick with the standard gearbox and fit a rc10 b4 diff and tamiya driveshafts as it's the most simple way to run brushless without reliability issues. Pm me if you need instructions to make the parts fit. Hope this helps.
