Default Slipper clutch burnt out! Why?!

Hi all.

My CAT sX made a bad sound on short grass the other day. On inspection, removed the spur gear, and found that the hole in the centre of the spur that mounts on the layshaft had melted, which allowed the spur to move about so it was not spinning true.

It was the standard 83T. I have now replaced it with an 82T. I have kept my pinion the same, which is a 22T.

Does anyone know what caused this melting and what I can do to prevent it happening again?

I had tightened the locknut on the end of the layshaft as per the manual I.e flush with the end of the layshaft.

Please help!!!

You need to compress the slippers pring once completely as this will settle the spring.And you should use threadlock on the slipper nut to prevent against loosening.

oh, I was hoping it would be something that simple! I will compress the spring and then loosen it as suggested.

After that, any recommendations as to how much I should tighten the locknut? At the moment I run it flush with the end of the layshaft.

hi, while holding the rear wheels, you should just about be able to turn the spur gear. if you cant turn it then its to tight, if it turns to easy then tighten more. mine is set with around 2mm of thread showing. hope that helps

most likely its been set to loose, this makes them very hot and melts/softens the plastic, set it so it just slips for a second or two from a standing start,on high bite track

The SX "white" spur doesn't tolerate a loose slipper. The SX2 (or Cougar SV) black spur gear is a lot better in this regard.

Or if you prefair the Losi or Associated spur gears i know somebody who does modified layshafts

I run my slipper with about 2-3mm of thread showing between the end of the nut and the end of the layshaft.

As yet i have never had any problems with melting the spurs and i still run the original white ones

thanks again all,

Schumacher sent me the upgraded black one (same part # so they must have stopped the white one now) and I've noticed that the black gear is thicker and meatier.

I've also tightened the spring all the way in then released it and it's a lot looser now so I now need to turn the locknut so about 3 - 4 mm is showing.

Seems fine!

I ran mine for 2 mins in the street with the slipper loose and the spur and plates were very hot on my cat. slightly tighter now and it's all good

You really need to set the slipper at the track.
Do what Bigred recommends and set it so that it slips for a couple of seconds from a standing full throttle start.

Although the slipper is very useful you can burn it out if you run it too loose on a low grip surface with a powerful motor.
