Default Transponders

Sorry the class clown here again (ahem)....until a few days ago I wondered how the hell do you tell the finishing order in races, then, if I am thinking right I find that cars have a transponder in them to relay the lap count and timings tp the computer controller/

Does everyone generally buy their own, does one transponder work on all tracks or do you need a few different types to work on various tracks?

What sort of price are they please

Generally one transponder will work at pretty much every single track.

There are two brands to choose from, either 'amb/my laps' or the 'mrt'

For ease of mind personally I'd buy a amb/mylaps transponder. You have a few different models but buying a 'Harry' model will work everywhere.

Buying new is £80+ buying second hand is £45+

You can buy the 2 wire Amb on eBay for £65 plus post from the US here:

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/301104331764

This is the hybrid or "Harry" that should work in almost all tracks

A lot of clubs will also have "handout" transponders which belong to the club and are loaned out to racers who do not have their own PT.

These normally need to be handed back after every race, so some one else can use them.

Ask at the club you want to race at if they have them.

Buying your own PT is best as you can fix it in your car and forget about it

You just take it along to your club or wherever you race and give them the number to be logged against you....

Read before buying - some transponders will not work at some clubs.

I'd recommend MRT, there in the uk, you can replace the wire and MRT will assist with any problems, I have never had over the years of owning 7.
Amb on the other hand have a crap service and do not even offer a repair should you damage the unreplacable wires.

Where as I wouldn't recommend MRT for anything other than cloning. If you get a transponder from MRT, I don't believe you'll have a unique number.

True, though I have lent my cloned units out on several occasions and selected one of the 20 other pre installed numbers and never had a clash

Wires can be replaced on the amb/mylaps units, there are even videos on You Tube showing you how to do it. I have replaced wires in one one of my amb pt's and also replaced a couple of other peoples wires.
