Firstly does your local club race short course trucks?
You may find most 1/10th off road clubs stick to 2wd and 4wd buggy, so may have more chance of racing in those classes each week.
I'm not trying to put you off short course, but if your local club doesn't race them often, then it quickly becomes a shelf toy.

If your local club runs them regularly, go to it and chat to the local racers, see what they are running and take advice. They will be best placed to say what works well (or not) at the track.
