Default Trackstar 4 Pole 4250KV Sensored Motor VS Castle 3800KV 4pole

Hi peeps,

Been doing some research on motors and its proving a bit tricky to get my head round it somewhat.

I currently run the Castle 1410 3800KV 4 Pole in my slash 4x4 race truck (indoor astro) on 14/54 gearing, its a powerful setup but had issues trying to run a CC BEC to power my Savox servo (long story see here for more, if you have had issues like this please let me know!!http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146054) So i started looking at a new ESC with a built in 6v/5A BEC and this lead to me then looking at motors aswell???? $$$£££££

Anyway my question is related to motors and my question is quite simple. Which motor would be better suited to racing (power output and performance wise) for the slash 4x4?

This one - https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...red_Motor.html

Or my current Castle 3800KV 4 pole.

In my reading I read that going on KV alone for brushless motor comparison is near impossible and that WATTS output is the best metric to use to compare. With that said the stats I found are:

CASTLE 1410 3800KV 4 Pole Sensored = approx 400-450watts (from a castle rep on a forum somewhere) Castle seem very tight lipped on all their specs.

Trackstar 540 4 Pole 4250KV Sensored = 610watts.

Am I right in thinking the Trackstar would rev faster than the Castle? If so higher RPMs and more power output would surely make it the better motor when using 2S LiPo's right, and if these assumptions are all correct why on earth is anyone buying Castle Motors when the Trackstars are a 1/3 of the cost??

Any input and advice on this is much appreciated

Thanks
Justin (UK)

Seeing as no one had any input I thought I would share what info I managed to glean from my own research.

First thing is the Castle 3800kv is according to them (and I quote) "approx 800watts output", this was direct from castle themselves, which just proves you can’t always believe what you read.

Huge power from a 540 motor, and in my slash I am geared 14/50 and it’s still barely getting hot. Castle advise to keep it all in the 180f range for long term use and on this gearing its only getting to a max of 115f during a 5 minute heat on a technical high bite astro track; so I think there is room to go up another tooth or possibly 2 on the pinion for more top speed to keep with those running sub 7.5t motors, all with more torque than you can shake a stick at?

The cheaper Trackstar motors appear to be fantastic 'spec wise' but it’s the long game where they are less good. Internals are decent at best and they are apparently good motors if you get one that works but wont last last a very long like some other higher brand motors Tekin/Castle etc. How much of an issue this is for some depends on what they want.

So all in all, comparing these 2 motors are like comparing a 4pot to a V8? The castle being better in every area it seems, more torque and more total power along with great reliability and with the right speedo can be monster fast (max 100k rpm). So if budget allows go for something of a higher quality - (see the phrase “buy cheap, buy twice”)

Based on what I have found over the last few weeks I have opted now to use a TEKIN motor and a rather swish TEKIN speedo (not naming the exact items as I am hoping they could be my secret weapon in the nationals). The motor I got is around £100 so it had better be good as I could have got 3 of the trackstar motors to suit different tracks/applications for the same price!! Even with all that said I am still going to take a punt on a couple of the Trackstar motors just purely to see how they compare in the field as they could well be suitable for another car (ie the little mans TT01 Drift Car).
