2wd Off Road Buggy Tyres / Inserts ??? Advice Please

Hi All,

I am hoping I can ask a really basic question.

I have been out of the racing scene for 25 yrs and just returning. I am almost complete on my DEX 210v2 build and have purchased tyres as follows:

Fr = Schumacher 2 row spikes

Rear = Ballistic Buggy Mini Spikes

I will be running at Mendip soon I hope and wanted to ask what inserts people are running. Do you use them on the front and back or just the front?

Apologies if this is a really basic thing to ask but sometimes its the little things that cause the most dilemmas !

In mendip we use two different tyre sets depending on weather.

Dry Rear: Shumacher mini-spike yellow, with Shumacher medium insert
Dry Front: Shumacher Yellow low-profile cut staggers

in super dry conditions we sometimes use the ballistic buggy white with a medium insert.

Wet Rear: Ballistic buggy Green mini spike, Shumacher medium insert
Wet Front: We use shumacher Yellow low-profile cut staggers, you can also use the Shumacher yellow mini-spike 2wd front, or the ballistic green equivalent.

Hello Graham,

This time of the year Ballistic Buggy greens with medium inserts are the choice of the majority for the rear. We are recomending the yellow two row studs on the front to people starting out as it takes the twitchiness away from the front of the car so you can consentrate on driving rather than fighting oversteer. Some use a soft insert in the front, some dont. Starting out, no front insert just the rear. When you are familier with the car and happy with your set up and handling, then move upto low profile staggered ribs on the front.

We keep all the above in the club shop.

Two row studs rule! Get the Yellow compound

Other than that....basically, its the Standard Schumacher Yellow compound tyre on the front and rear, some use mini pins, some use mini spikes.....it's all down to driver preference.

If a tyre I use works for me, it doesn't mean that it will work for you.

Tom post is correct, as is Paul's.....but if you want my advice, try a few combinations while the track is open for practice. See what suits you the best and go with that , however......medium inserts in the rear tyres and (generally) no inserts in the front tyres. Pretty much goes for any astro track.

You can get a track pass from the club website, that will give you access to the track on a certain day (provided there are no races happening) or you can get an annual membership for the club (probably best if you are planning on coming regularly) via the club website as well.

Good I was about to ask this same question! We just moved to the area from the US and this is the closest offroad track to us (We live in Street) When our buggies get here in a couple weeks we will be making a visit to race for sure! Do you sell narrow front hex wheels in the club shop? I have Schumacher yellow LP cut staggers, but need wheels.

keeping it on this new members themed thread, what are the popular buggies both 2wd and 4wd at Mendip? I currently have a Team C and Yokomo, and my kid has a pretty dialed Schumacher SV2 (so much so,that I will sometimes race his buggy haha)

But I have tossed around the idea of selling the Team C and Yok if there is more setup knowledge/support for a different buggy. (Hopefully my buggies get here this week!)

Theres not really been a more favoured buggy in 2wd, most brands are well represented really. Plenty of Durangos, Serpents, has been quite a few Yoks that seem to work well, prob not so many Schumachers but having said that, there does now seem to be quite a few KF2's turning up and they go well.

Just bring along what you have, you will most likely find someone running the same buggy ...

Just my opinion......

They are all very similar when you have them set up for your driving style. Most brands are represented well at the club, Associated, Durango, Schumacher, Yokomo etc..... There are even a few Losi drivers clinging on to some hope

Did the cars eventually make it through customs? If you are set up and ready to hit the track, I think a few of the members are planning on a few practice laps on Saturday. If you haven't got your membership sorted out, you can always get a day pass and come down to get a bit of track time in and some advice from a few of the locals.

I will be there with the B44.3 to get it set up for the first regional in a few weeks Hoping to be there around 10/11am

Not yet, supposed to be here on the 25th is the latest word (it will be nice to have most of our furniture too!) Good to know about all the buggies, the Yokomo is very similar to the B5M so most of those setups should be very close for me.
