Heres one, I flipped the arms and redrilled for the ARB. Didn't get to try it more than a couple of packs on turf, before I sold the 410 but it felt good.

Default I tried this out

Now I am no great shakes, at driving and hadn't driven for over 7 months. I tried this mod out (shocks to the rear) with a longer chassis.

I found that the rear end was a bit heavy and sluggish - hard to describe. Should I try lighter oils - will that do the trick?

I think you got too much roll
Adjust the roll center.
Try removing the spacers under the inner camber links.
Or use shorter links.

Has anybody know what exactly this mod changes? I've seen so many people do this and say it's great, but nobody explains why.

with the arms swept forward for toe angle, flipping the shock holes to the backside would actually push them further out from the chassis slightly compared to normal. That would effectively be the same as a slightly stiffer spring. It seems like most people extend their wheelbase when they do this. Is the difference in handling just the result of the change in wheelbase?

I just weighed one of my shocks and it came out to 20g. I think moving a total of 40g to the very back of the car might make the biggest change. I'll have to try it and see how it comes out on the scales. I could always use more weight over the rear in my car.

I think it has to do with the weight and where the weight is. It gives more of a pengelum effect similar to rear motor, to a lesser extent.

is there any real gain with this modification on a high bite carpet track or is it more aimed at clay or Astro tracks

Definite gain.

It increases traction or lets you run less rear pack and maintain the traction you have.

Downside is that you have hung more weight both beyond the rear axle and more importantly away from the polar centre of the car.

This is what Xray recommend on their XB4. I know it's neither a 2WD nor a TD, but apparently it's for high traction. My guess is that the rearward shock position would indeed add a little pendulum effect - which you don't really want/need on low-bite because the back end will 'always' try to step out, whereas on high-bite it might be preferable to have the rear end slide out that tiny bit (more) - much like you see in slow-mo shots from F1 cars - it helps the chassis point more towards the inside of the corner (increasing steering in a way) I think?

I think the main effect of putting the shocks in front of or behind the arm is the way the arm twists when the suspension is in use.

plus the fact that your putting 2 rather heavy components of the car quite a lot further back .. !!

I just flipped the arms and all on mine .. seems to work on sandy astro rather nicely .. also went back up to kit rear springs instead of the lt greens ... best my 'Rangos ever been .. and on kit chassis too

I've flipped mine Neal. You just have to dremmel the wishbone slightly on the inside to clear the diff outdrives.

Flip arms is much better than drill holes (DEX210). I added 4mm shims so that the damper is straight (see picture). If you flip the arms of your DESC210R you need to dremel some plastic. Danosborne6661 already say that.
