Apparently it is, there's a thread on rc10talk where original and rere parts are compared side by side - almost everything on the new car is interchangeable with the original and by the looks of it you should even be able to fit the new slipper assembly.

I've bought a few spares from Banzai to tidy up my original, bumper, motor guard, front underpan, wishbones etc... all direct fit

If you want to replace the gears, you are going to have to replace the complete gearbox internals. The rerelease uses a 3mm pitch belt, so you will also have to replace the front diff as well.
The rerelease diff is mounted on 10x15 bearings, while the original uses 8x14mm, so to mount the new parts in an original gear case would mean finding some 10 x 14 bearings, which as far as I know do not exist.

The only way you can upgrade the gears is to replace the complete gearboxes including the gear cases.

What motors are folks running? I have put a 10.5t in and I can't keep the front end on the ground. Slackened the slipper off as far as it will go. I have a 13.5t in my original 1985 one and that doesn't suffer wheelies - do I just need to drop down a few turns on the new one?

Not yet... Modelsport just showing as "supplier stock"
Not broken anything yet, but if I recall back to the old days, I used to lose the dog bones so always had a couple spare. If you run the big bumper that pretty much protects the front

And indoors at Batley, the excitement of packing all the gym mats away to see how many frog hex bones or optima dog bones one could find (and body clips).

Most of my paper round income was spent replacing them!

That's why I'm making a "Pro" style upper deck with the battery relocated forward. I figure it was the trick back in the day, should still work :-) plus I've always loved the Pro

Good plan! I never knew the pro as I sold up in 1985. How will the steering work with battery forward?

It used a long rod over the battery. I was able to fit it by cutting a little access hole you can see in the pic. The rod on the pro was a thin wire, this uses a straight piece of all thread. We will see how it holds up
