Just for reference in response to my masking tape thread.

http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180253

I wanted to cut my materials cost and tape would help do this instead of liquid mask.

I did try Tamiya tape and it was kinda a pain and kinda not. It cut well enough, but masking around certain areas, even on a TC was annoying as hell to point out the obvious disadvantage of tape. I ended up with a few bleeds that I wouldn't of had with liquid mask that I never really recovered from.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Interesting read about the tape, Are you going back to Liquid mask? I dont think the mask is all that expensive per shell, buy in big quantities and i think its cost effective enough.

A cost effective white backer is what im after

I think you can mask a whole shell for about 50p with tape, where as liquid mask costs about £3 per TC shell (This is from my experience of getting 5 TC shells masked from a 16oz bottle costing £14/15)

I was working it out that paint costs average about £3.50 to paint a TC shell, and then sealant cost about £1.50/£2 per shell. So the total for materials is about £8 each time to paint a TC shell. That's fine if you charge £40 per TC shell, but people only seem to want to pay about £20-25 and that's a no go for me now after it takes 8-10 hours to do the job.

So to answer your question I would use tape for a cheap basic job and liquid mask when I know they needed a pro job.

Love the purple shell a few posts back

Have you tried sourcing your stuff from offshore or in bulk?

Cheers.

I think you could save a few quid bulk buying in the UK, but I never wanted to pay out for it initially. Shipping overseas is too pricey for the weight of bottles of materials.

I just moan too much now with them was once a cool hobby when I enjoyed my improvement but now i've reached my ability I'm looking for other things to justify doing them as most of the time I lost money on them

I'm on your page Steve. Dialled my painting right back. Free work really doesn't appeal. A solid days work plus materials should pay a commensurate rate. Got tired of being robbed.

Bitter and jaded? Yes a bit.

Its an all too familiar cycle, seeing talented painters explode onto the forum, full of enthusiasm, then eventually all reach the same point.

Rant over!

Is charging more not an option? I was given the price for the shells I had painted I didn't barter the cost

This is the problem, as Steve has already pointed out to be fair. It's hard to charge for a days work, when others are prepared to churn 'em out for 25-30 quid. Or bought off ebay, and including the shell for much the same money!!

Personally, I'm quite satisfied keeping it on the download these days, only painting for my lad, myself and a small handful of close friends. Were I to put my graphic designers head on, I'd be charging the nominal £30 an hour right off the bat. But we all know that's not going to fly!!! I'd go hungry real quick, charging £150 for the average 5-hour paintjob. Lol!!!
