Default Advice on a TC02C Please

I have recently returned to RC and have bought my son (8) a Jekyll to give him a taste of driving / racing an RC car. So that we can "play" together I have picked up a 2nd hand TC02C which has come with some electrics already installed - a Team Orion Vortex R10 ESC as well as a 14T Team Orion Neon Sensorless motor.
I already have an LRP Sphere ESC and a Novak 6.5T sensored motor that I was given. I'm told they work, but not tested yet as I've had nothing to put them in.

Which would you advise? Will a TC02C take the faster motor?

TC02C will take the 6.5 no problem, but it will be a bit of an animal....

Presumably I could drop the max output on my transmitter to reduce top speed or will it be the acceleration etc that will make it hard to handle?

A 6.5 will take off like a scalded cat! and may make punching out of corners tricky if you're relatively new (you could loosen the slipper to calm this down).

My H2 has a 9t brushless and causes me plenty of problems with it's speed so I'm thinking of putting my 13t brushless back in until my skills improve.

I have a 10,5 with turbo and timing and it is as fast as the others, just more manageable in the infield.
I would only use a 6,5 in a 4*4 (but that is me)

I run with a 10.5 with timing and its a rocket and very good on the sections with less traction. Nobody believes its a 10.5. It's a team powers 10.5 and I have 3 of them. I don't need a 6.5 in a 2wd for where I race.

The Team Orion R10 you have is a great speedo and you could turn all timing/turbo etc off and it'll be manageable. Saying that, you'd be better off with a 7.5 or 8.5.

Thanks for all that. Sounds like I'll stick with the 14t Orion to begin with. The 6.5 turn came with a b44.1 I bought but I never used it - maybe put that back in the 4wd then?

Until my last outing, I had never used anything but a 6.5 motor in my Lupuz/TC02C, which may go some way to explaining why I'm so awful at driving these things!

At the last indoor meeting I ran a 10.5 in it and it was a lot easier to handle.

I was still crap but I put that down to age and arthritis!

Something to consider regarding motor selection.
The power curve for all motors starts off the same. The difference between motors of different winds is that the lower winds hit a higher maximum rpm. The motors in general have the same torque curve....

Now, consider that the travel in the throttle stick/trigger is constant ie. the same regardless of what motor you use. (ignoring adjusted end points)

So if the rpm range in lower wind motors is longer than higher wind motors then the ratio of stick movement to motor rpm change is going to be higher in lower wind motors, and lower in higher wind motors.

This means the throttle will be much more sensitive with low wind motors. If you are a newbie, this is not what you want.

I have run 6.5 motors in my 2wd in the past, but the time you lose constantly focusing on being sensitive with the throttle is greater than the time you gain being fast down the straight. Outdoors in the dry I always use a 7.5 with a little boost. On low traction tracks I often drop to a boosted 8.5.

Great advice - thank you all.

I'd only mentioned using a 6.5T as I happen to have one in the garage and the 14T fitted sounds a little slow. I haven't driven the car yet as I am awaiting a receiver so I can run it from my existing radio.

I am not a total newbie in that I ran Hotshots and Optimas back in the early to mid 80s, but I have certainly had quite a break. I took a 2nd hand b44.1 to my local track recently and I can still get it round reasonably quick, but lacking a certain finesse. I guess I'd be more "rustie" than "newbie"

I will run it first with existing Orion stuff before I start changing parts.

Now... onto those damaged rear hubs...

Well, I've tried it with the 14t Orion in and it goes like a proverbial rat up a drain pipe so think I can stick with it. The Orion ESC doesn't have any instructions - does anyone know if it is likely to have a lipo cut off, or if not, what do I need to make it safe to run?

Ps, I don't have the program box unfortunately but I guess the advice might be to get one. I have a reventon prog box - presume these are not interchangeable!!

Yes the R10 has à voltage cut off.
Your other program box won't work so i would get the orion programmer

As was said above the SP box will not work with the Orion. You can pick up the Orion box for £20 from Insideline Racing.

It should work but you may have to update the software depending on when the speedo was last updated. The box will tell you this when you plug it in.

Little tip - if you are using a non Orion motor with that speedo you will have to unplug the sensor wire from the motor or it won't work.
