Default Mechanic Advice please :)

Discovered that my 1999 Puma has it's exhaust hanging a bit low at the back - on inspection the bracket for the back box has snapped.

Thing is the fastener for the bracket is 'welded' \ to the backbox so what can I do ? (see piccy)

I've supported it for now using lots of tie wraps - is this safe ! Will they just melt !

Cheers Guys.

Andy

if your running it for some time ie long trip they may start to smell of melting plastic.there ist really much you can do with out bodging it up, you could use 2 jubilee clips, 1 round exhaust then other fed thur it and thur the rubbish bush all tightended up.

1) weld a new bracket on. Not ideal!

2) replace the backbox

+1 as it would need it to pass a MOT

Hi.
Yes I came across that site - have you used them ?
The Puma backbox is listed as a 'silencer / tailpipe ?' for £43.63 is that right seems cheap, it is the whole backbox isn't it

There's the same thing on ebay for even cheaper ?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Puma-...#ht_2252wt_877
Are these non-ford items ?

Cheers
Andy

No exhaust will be a ford genuine item as ford simply do not make exhausts, they buy in from one of the bigger names like Bosal e.t.c.

Most repro exhausts fit ok, it depends which section your buying, but by the looks of that back box, you cant go too wrong with either one youve linked to there.

Just make sure to buy new clamps and hangers with it. Well worthwhile whilst your there.

I have used them before, very good service, Royal Mail delivery man will love you loads to! It isn't a genuine part, so may take a little 'jiggling' to get it to fit right, but going to be far cheaper than an exhaust specialist or Ford.

Also...

If by some miracle the exhaust is the original Ford item it will (probably) be a single piece so will need chopping in the right place for the new backbox to fit.

Sir may I congratulate yo on your useage of zip ties, but unfortunately they will just melt off.

Why not simply remove the backbox, start wearing a baseball cap and park up in the local maccy D's? Then 16 year old girls will flock from afar to be impregnated by you.

Lol

I've supplemented the zip ties with a coat hanger bent around the exhaust and through the bracket until I get my new back box

Why get a new back box if the coat hanger works.

I do like the way you haven't replaced the zip ties but supplemented them with a coat hanger. Have you thought about elastic bands, chewing gum, double sided tape etc. Why not just go to a local reputable garage and see what they suggest.

LOL !

I can reliably confirm that :

Driving from Leeds to Wakefield - Zip ties are fine.
Driving from Leeds to Bradford - Zip ties melted through...

Thankfully the metal wrapped around - backup plan saved the day !

I have now replaced everything with jubilee clips
Car is booked into local garage - £25 to replace the backbox with the new one I bought on e-bay
