today i raced at worksop and chris long tightend my rear diff for me and i still cant belive the diffrence it made...

i have found the back end of my new cat really loose since new (wich is not normal for the cat.

i saw lots of cats weaving under power and noticed most of them were diffing out and i think this is making the back end break away on sweapers etc.

just thought i would post to tell you guys because this made so much diffrence to my car...

Id better tell you what I did. I fitted your new outdrives, cleaned all the parts except the thrust race as that was clean, then used loads of AE grease. The amount of grease I used makes it a little tighter, and I tighten it until it is almost touch tight - as tight as I can make it using tip of thumb and forefinger, i.e. no real torque, otherwise you will dent the plates.

I have done the diffs in my new car like this. The diffs in my current car are well overdue a rebuild. Should really rebuild them when they start spinning freely - as you noticed mine really do.

So do you tighten it right up then?

I had a couple of probs with mine today.
Mainly the rear snapping away as I backed off into corners and the rear stepping out as I nailed it onto the straight.

No, not right up. I have over tightened a diff in my SX and it killed the plates. So on 2nd attempt put less torque through it, don't crank on it, but do make sure there is some resistance in the diff action - thats what makes the difference.

You car reacting like you say could be due to having a one way roller, or/and having drag brake set atall, I have drag brake off, max brake set to 100% but use perhaps 25%-50% maximum on the stick - any more than that is too much brake. On the rear stepping out on exit, that is down to setup and perhaps too much power/punch. I was watching your car today infact, and it actually looked fine on the track, otherwised id have volunteered my help.

Yep i agree with leon! Some pro rebuilt my rear diff today and tightened it quite tight. The rear end of my car was planted! Gave me alot of confidence to push the car harder and harder.

What's everyone running in the front? Full time 4wd, one way roller, one way diff?
Im personally running full time 4wd with the front diff tight. The car is very easy to drive like this. Own preference i suppose.

I tried both today. The diff and full 4wd felt really easy to drive, fastest lap was 21.90. With one way in, I went to 21.10 in the next round and 20.75 in the final, but it felt a little harder to hug the line, a little more skitish - but it jumped better, especially the first double in the double, single, single section.

I think with full 4wd and diff I tend to over drive the car, as it isn't rewarding to drive smooth. But it does feel easy to drive hard.

With one way diff I tent to drive on the hard side of smooth to reward with faster laps, but overdrive it to the degree of what I would with a full 4wd and diff and it soon bites back, and im crashing regular.

Thanks for that Chris, overall, yeah it wasn't bad. It always took me a couple of laps to get into it thats my main problem I think, but once I got into a rythm it felt good.
It sounds like I'm going in the right direction then, 'cos I was messing around with the brakes setting on the speedo most of the day. And trying to use less and less brakes if I needed to.
As for the back end kicking out on power.....I'll have to tame my thumbs a bit! lol

Opinion: If you set the rear diff too tight it just feels like the handbrakes on and your laptimes tumble, i hate the car like this, just somewhere sensible in the middle is where you want to be.

Fact: Looser rear diff gives more steering into a corner (off power steering) but it can make you diff out if you boot it out of the corner.
Looser front diff gices you more steering into a corner (off power steering)- better for tight tracks. Firmer front gives you more on power steering- better for fast, bigger tracks.

Opinion: If your running a diff that is ^^^, my personal pref is front diff with one way roller on most tracks but for real slippy tracks like clay use full front diff, no roller.
