other than the "let your budget be your guide" - read around the forum and become better versed on specific vehicles you might be interested in and what you plan to do (backyard bash or race, onroad or offroad) so as to not ask such generalized and vague questions and it will allow others to give better qualified advice when they know what you're looking at getting into

He is looking at racing 10th off road 4WD. I would say he was looking around £400-500ish max budget to get complete race ready.

Well if it's first car you will only be racing it at club level. And if it's a 4wd car your after have a look at the new lrp buggy. It seems really good for the money considering you can get one for £140 rtr.

Right ok I know I didn't put it clear to start with... Im looking to buy everything eg car motor radio gear, all for £500-£600. Im thinking HPI as my cousin has one and i think it is very good. I will be racing 10th off road 4WD Thanks

Personally I think that if you're racing (rather than bashing) then avoid HPI. Go for something that there are a substantial number of at the track already, that way there is no shortage of advice on set-up and spares to beg/borrow.
Can't go wrong with a B44, maybe a B-max, maybe even D4 or laser zx5.

Definatley stay away from HPI. I have one of their cars and am still waiting for parts for it that i ordered about 8 weeks ago.
How about the Schumacher cat SX2?

For someone that's not touched an R/C car though, isn't the cat a little weak?

there is another thread on this forum that shows a relative comparison of today's prices versus late-1980s pricing, and keeping that (and inflation) in mind it doesn't seem that far off what's reasonable or to be expected
