Set-up Advice for XERUN 120A 1S - offroad

Hi Chaps,

I've decided to have a go with a brushless set-up and so I'm after some advice on general starting points for setting up the speedo for off-road 2WD buggy use.

I've got the Hobbywing XERUN 120A 1S speedo and a Speed Passion V2.0 Ultrastock 11.5 motor (3100 kV). It'll be used in a Mad Monkey on a bumpy grass track (Hinckley). What I'm after is a set-up that will give me smooth control in the in-field and good speed on the straights. I'm a pretty consistent driver and my approach tends to be 'less is more' - I'd rather have a slightly slower car that I can gun around rather than an uncontrollable pocket rocket.

With the above in mind, any pointers/set-ups would be appreciated...

I run mine in my mad monkey with a 6.5 motor. Turn the punch up to full, same with the timing. No drag brake and 100% brake availability. 9% centre point and just keep it smooth on the trigger finger. I also run the slipper done up fully and have had to add inserts to the diff to stop it spinning up.

Have tried running the lower power modes and just don't get on with it. I want the car to accelerate as fast as possible and for me to decide what possible is.

Thanks for the response Ben - but I think I was after settings towards the milder end of the spectrum.

Ok try going for one off the top on motor advance and two from top on punch. There's quite a difference in these settings. Any lower and the throttle response is a little sluggish.

I just picked up one of these.
Am running in my kyosho RT5. I was running it with a hobbywing 4300kv motor and then a Novak ballistic 8.5. With 2s lipos.

In both cases, the speedy shuts down after around 2 mins of running. I'm not sure why. It looks as if it had reached some cut off point - Temp or low voltage? But I haven't even finished a 5 min heat when that happens.

I'm still using the standard settings on the speedy. Have tried running with a different batt pack but with the same result

Oh, currently running without a fan but I don't think that should be a problem?

Ok I'm running a 2s 120Amp in a Durango and using these settings

Punch = Level 2
Motor Timing = 22.5deg i think (one from max)

Punch is fine, smooth but not dull, though might go up one for a bit more. Top end is nice and fast.

For what its worth motor is an HPI 6.5t and cells are 5000 30c

EDIT - Using stock software on v2.1 speedo!?

You will need the fan on, as the truck is quite heavy, and will be making the speedo work fairly hard. I run a fan on mine in my sc10 and have no problems.

I listed a setup in this thread http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71834 that seems to work well for us on an astro track. Quite smooth and good top end. It is the stock software though, not mod. 21 Pinion & 87 Spur

First thing to choose is a software setting. 205MOD is simpler, 528MOD allows you to dial in a small amount of boost and turbo if you are that way inclined.

I run 205MOD and have used it with 13.5 and 8.5 Speed Passion V3 motors.

Try and drive the car with drag brake set to zero. Maximum brakes according to your needs and feel. Timing should be set at the maximum (unless motor temps get too high), Punch should be set according to your own feel, even high settings feel good. Then gear it for good top end on the long straight, keeping an eye on temps. Bring them down by finding the right balance between ESC timing (or mechanical motor timing) and gear ratio.

I use 119 mod in mine (1S hobbywing) with a 6.5 motor

DRSS: 3
Brakes: 75%
Drag Brake: 0
Boost: 10
Turbo: 10 (although i have tried it without turbo, not a lot of difference as it's only on the straight)
