As a driver myself there is no way that any of these guys would buy cars that were unreliable.
Just for fun... one of the hyundai's was bought brand new in 2004 and now has nearly 800,000 miles... (second engine - first went at 480,000)
Col, cheers for this. Maybe I'll get a Hyundai next time

Default Peugeot 807 anyone

Hi
I have one of these and have owned 4 previously over the past 10 years, great car massive spec & extras on them and very reliable. Never let me down, all the rear seats can be removed within a minute each to make space for all your racing kit.

Take a look at them, for the same spec vw sharan etc you would pay £8 - £10k you can pick a good one up for around £3k

They come in 2.2 or 2.0 litre engine. if you buy a later one then look for the 136bhp. I'm getting around 48mpg on the motorway and averaging 32mpg around town.

Shameless plug I will have an automatic one for sale within a couple of weeks. 2ltr engine full leather interior, electric sliding doors and loads more

I was in the same boat when we had our twin boys - went from 1 kid to 3 overnight so needed a bigger car.

We drove all the usual suspects - Smax - VW - Renault etc.

Nicest car by a mile to look at / sit in was the S-Max - but they were new at this time and 2nd hand ones were rare - also cost new was silly.

We ended up buying a Grand Scenic 1.9 Diesel (new but a UK Import) and 7 years on it's been great. It's done 80K and engine feels as good as the day we got it. Fully loaded with all 5 or us / roof box and luggage it will still do 50mpg on the motorway. Does 40+ just pootling around. Boot is also huge and it's a 7 seater when it needs to be.

Don't know what i'd replace it with when the day comes - probably a low milage S-Max. It's super comfy - great for long journeys and most of the time I prefer driving it to my Civic Typer R!

After spending months looking for a replacement car, I ruled out ANYTHING French (they are either quirky, wear badly or just shit, had enough experience of them!!). German, cool but silly price tags or silly mileage, Japanese is where I ended up, did try a Nissan but found it a little 'cheap' feeling, Mazda was tidy but mechanically meh, Toyota just didn't age well so ended up with a Honda and, although I have had to do a little work, it is a 2005 model with 147,000 miles on the clock it pulls like a train.

Had our Vauhxhall Zafira for few years and its been the perfect Family car,
No breakdowns or problems. Its 8 years old now.
But i got the petrol 1.6 and it wont do the MPG you looking for. However the service costs are next to nothing!

I wouldn't buy French again.......

The 1.8 petrol is actually more economical than the 1.6

If you're after fuel economy don't buy an RX-8 lol (22mpg on a run)

We've had a Smax for 3 years now 2.0 TDI 140 it's a fantastic car and good to tow a caravan with, wish we had the titanium but only for parking sensors and looks, it does 35mpg towing and 45ish without, have a Mazda CX5 2.2 150 2wd for work that only returns 44mpg on a run with just me in so when I eventually tow with it it will be less than the Max.
Have been told that the 1.8tdi is more reliable as it's a Ford engine and the 2.0 we have is actually Peugeot made!!
