Default What is Maximum

So this is the issue!

When setting up an ESC and calibrating it the manuals always say set your trims to Zero bios and your throttle/brake travel to 100% Now to me 100% means to the Max! But if you have a Spektrum Max is 150%.

So do I set the controls to read 100% or set the controls to their Max.

I hope this is not to confusing.

Ianski.

I think the travel percent just dictates how much throttle travel you have when you set it to say 100 or 150 percent. Doesn't matter. But you have to have dual rate etc set to max otherwise it went set, won't on my mt4 anyway.

When calibrating set to 100% after that you can adjust the epa to whatever you want.

The normal maximum for electric vehicles is to set the transmitter at 100% before calibrating the esc, any racing adjustments would then usually be to reduce the throttle EPA or use the rate switch or knob to accommodate slippery racing conditions.
Most transmitters are designed to accommodate servo driven throttles for I/C engines as well, here you may need the extra mechanical travel over the normal 100% servo throw to get full travel of the carburetor throttle slide, hence the extra 50% of available travel.

Hmmmm I get all that and hear what is being said. Maybe I am over thinking but if in Spektrums case the scale or range for movement starts at 0 and travels to 150. If you calibrate the ESC and set 100 as max it's not actually correct.

Am I over thinking ?

If the manuals instead of saying set to 100% just say set to max travel! Would you still set it to 100% if the max is 150%. Hmmm

yeah it can be a bit confusing.

Simply, if you set up your ESC end points when your tx throttle end points are set to 100%, you will get full power when you give it full stick. if you then increased your tx end point to say 110%, you wont get any more output, as the esc is still giving full power. you will just reach full power before you get to the end of the stick and have a bit of a full power dead zone at the top.

If you set up your esc when you set your transmitter to 150%. you will still get full power when you give it full stick.

I always set 100% on the tx. My rationale for this is that using the 150%, you are going to the extreme ends of the PWM duty cycle (the signal out of the receiver), whilst i am sure most ESCs will interpret that with no problems, its just better not to push the limits, as you don't get a performance improvement, just a wider spread on the PWM signal.

As previous posts have pointed out, its slightly different for servos, is that you don't have a way of setting up the end points on the servo itself, so you can only do it on the transmitter.

Ianski.
Maximum throttle and brake travel to me means turn everything up to the max before calibrating as its asking for 100% travel. I've never had a problem doing it this way.

many thanks to everyone....can i just ask if you only need to set it to 100 why do some systems allow it to go 150, which is not a small amount its a 1/3 which is a considerable percentage. so you have a 1/3 movement in your stick at top end that is dead? just seems wrong..

SORRY just read it again and i think the Penny has dropped,

but then i cant see the purpose of being able to set end point to 150 if 100 is the max any ways....weird.

many thanks guys....

Default Sometimes we need more than 100%!

As I said earlier some model installations require additional servo throw for the throttle channel just as we might for steering too, it is not all about electric car racing, a lot of us are i/c racers too and we use a lot of the different settings and adjustments available on modern radios!

Happy racing.
