Poor picture quality didnt help, but they are smooth Losi, as I am running metric threaded titanium ball studs and Losi ballcups.
Its a confidence thing, as I've never had issues with these ball joints popping off. When running my 501x and 511, and Durango, I suffered ball cup issues, and switched to Losi ... so I just built the Kyosho with them from the start.

For information to those not used to Kyosho cars the kit ball studs and cups are the best I've used on any car at any scale. In fact they can be a bit of a struggle to get off when you need too.
I know what you mean about fitting things for confidence though, I'm the same with Futaba servos |

I inaugurated mine at a 50+entry (actually 100+, but 50+ 2wd's) race saturday, full 3 qualifiers 3 mains, and I'm doing both 2wd and 4wd... one-day race... talk about racing stress ...
maiden run: do the trims, adjust brake, then practice, something funny with the battery after 2 laps... go back to pits... change pack, go back to track, adjust diff/slipper combo on the track side (more on diff later), more electronic funnies... get back to pit, check here and there, crap, end of free practice already??? dang... ok, no more practice 3mn controlled practice next: car feels ok, nothing to complain about but for now it's just about learning the track, really, and still something "wrong" with the powerplant which I can't quite figure out for now but that's getting worse... 1st qualifier, car runs but more electronic gremlins, power delivery is not "right", I feel handicapped, 14th after Q1... I go to my electronic guru (merci WPV!) who diagnoses the issue: hall sensor kaputt... motor change between marshalling and 2wd rounds, and for Q2 the car now feels "right", I am in the top 10 now, plus I learn the track a bit more and I'm beginning to "feel" the car. Q3 I think I do a top5 time, car feels good, very easy to drive, fantastic balance, but then again the diff/slipper combo isn't 100%... Overall I qual'ed 6th, my target was to make the A, I'm in, box ticked The mains were a bit chaotic but I was getting more and more comfy with the car, especially as for the last one I was severely understeering on- and off-power, and had to close all doors to the guys behind me. 2 best mains out of 3 got me 5th overall as I got like 6th or 7th in the last one because of the understeering, not bad for the car's first outing. Once back home it appeared my outside front tire came unglued... Net, the RB6 drives safely, both easy and fast, was rock solid, I'm happy The only true gripe I have is the diff... it seems the tuning window is really narrow, you can go from slippy to too tight in about 1/4th of a turn of adjustment (at least being able to adjust it externally is awesome after years of associated ballcup-popping!). My buddy Didier who's a semi-official Kyosho driver (and who ended 4th grrrr...) said his diff is the same, and he's even more surprised as his RB5 diff wasn't like this last year, even though it shared the same part numbers (no idea if the latter is true)... Any insight, gentlemen? would some of the materials (spring? rings? balls? plates?) have changed? Am I / are we missing something? Both of us are usually pretty decent with diff-building... Other more minor concern is the slop the car has developed in a very short time... again, Didier said his car was doing the same whereas the RB5 seemed to not get that much slop... How are yours doing on that matter? Still, the car is just a f'n blast to drive in MM - even with a full-size stick... And I know it's reliable, as opposed to my Dex210 which only did half a raceday before it was sold - I like it a lot so far, I just hope I can get the diff to my likings cheers Paul |

Hi Paul
Reference your diff: Make sure you compress the spring with pliers and hold compressed for a bit. The adjustment window then should be much more consistent for you. I also do the same with the slipper spring - much more feel afterwards Try it and let us know - Enjoy

Hi Tony, thanks for the input. I have compressed/released both the slipper and diff spring about half a dozen times before final assembly... an old trick I learnt while building diffs maaaaaany moons ago. I did not hold it compressed for a bit though I have to admit, and I build my diffs the non-standard way ie I tighten it progressively (as opposed to making it bottom-out and then back out). I will do as you suggest as I rebuild it for the next race. Who knows, maybe I'll find sthing else too. Do you confirm the diff is the exact same one as the RB5's (materials)??? Cheers Paul |

Only differences are the tungsten carbide balls & x gear lubes, both improvements over the RB5.
I would never recommend fully tightening any difference & backing it off as you run the risk of damaging your fresh plates / balls. Just nip it up, run it in @ 1/3rd throttle with one wheel off the ground for 2mins,then the other wheel off the ground for another 2 mins. Adjust to taste then ignore for several months.... the Kyosho diffs really are that good! |
