Gear box update.

Essentially set on 2 designs.

Bottom to top.

Bottom - this was the original design. since having one printed and being able hold it and see it i have refined it a tad.slot type waterfall

Middle - more refined still version. have changed the waterfall brace to hinge type think they are way more user friendly. again 2 versions Hi and low for the many lipos we have today .

Top - Hinged. After some comments from Northy, Decided to make a hinged version so either. the waterfall can hinge or a direct battery brace could hinge.

small update

Created a gearbox with a hinged brace that could have a hinged battery bar.

Alternate hinged GB :

comparion:

In the comparison you can see a few subtle differences which i feel have improved it.

also been playing around with the print materials. trying to learn about 3d printing a bit more as it was all alien and is new to me.

This whitey/grey material is much much better than the red stuff i had printed recenlty. much more integrity less flex i feel its a good material for a gear box, how ever im not 100% satisfied with the print so thats somthing i will look into...

Liam

Love that car jc!
Looking good Liam. Just a thought regarding space with waterfall. Could you make it so that the mounting point on the chassis is wider apart but fixed outside motor pinion and endbell leaving room to shift lipos backwards towards motor? ( if that makes any sence)

Hi Liam,

Would you tell me your thoughts why a hinged waterfall seems to be more userfriendly?
And please keep us updated if it was the right decision to go with it.

How did the "holes"/bearing seats come out at 3d printing? Did the fit in nicely, are the too tight in there or too loose? Did you have to rework them?

And how did your figure out the hight of the centre of the slipper spindle? Did you "copy" the hight by existing low cg gearboxes for diffrent cars?
Or did you figure it out on your own? How much space for a bigger pinion did you leave? And how much space from the eadge of the pinion to the chassis did you leave? Cause there might be a slight movement or diffrent tolerances.

Sorry for the lot of questions.
Cheers
Till

I think I can picture Griff's idea, instead of having a waterfall that comes straight forwards, have it so the mounting points sweep off at more of an angle so they sit very wide across the chassis and presumably parallel with the end of the motor plate. It would give you a little more room to play with, but only a few mm.

The issue with designing a waterfall is getting the right amount of torsional flex. The standard YZ-2 piece benefits from cutting the two outer braces off leaving just the centre one, a-la B6. Once you have the car up and running it might be an idea to have a few different designs printed and ready to test, it'd be interesting to hear your opinion on the differences.

Exactly that!
When I ran the proto cr2 it had no brace on top of gearbox, just a small L bracket screwed to the motor plate. Even tho the brace wasn't central I still prefered the handling compared to when. Top central brace was fitted
