Default Nene Valley National Report

Fresh back from the first BRCA national round of 2013 and I can confirm that the competition in Largecsale 4WD is getting serious!
With nearly 70 drivers it was a great turnout at the awesome Nene Valley track. Even the awful weather on Saturday didn't dampen spirits or put people off, good effort chaps!
Round by round qualifying (This simply means best two out of three rounds combined) in the fast changing track conditions proved troublesome for most competitors and with no margin for error, you had to get it right.
Round one was taken by Ian Oddie (FG) followed by Stevo Backland (MCD) and then Richard Stiles (MCD). Round two saw Richard Stiles (MCD) taking 1st place followed by a consistant performance from Stevo Backland (MCD) in 2nd and Ian Oddie (FG) in 3rd place. Unfortunately Our new recruit to the MCD team "Steve Haynes" suffered radio gear failure for the first two rounds but came back fighting in Round three to take the 1st place spot followed by Stevo Backland (MCD) then Ian Oddie (FG).
Top 5 results by round -
Round 1
  1. Ian Oddie (FG)
  2. Stevo Backland (MCD)
  3. Rik Stiles (MCD)
  4. Mike Humphries (FG)
  5. Darren Johnson (MCD)
Round 2
  1. Rik Stiles (MCD)
  2. Stevo Backland (MCD)
  3. Ian Oddie (FG)
  4. Mike Humphries (FG)
  5. Darren Johnson (MCD
Round 3
  1. Steve Haynes (MCD)
  2. Stevo Backland (MCD)
  3. Ian Oddie (FG)
  4. Rik Stiles (MCD)
  5. Mike Humphries (FG)
The finals were run as a "single sided Christmas tree" meaning that the top seven drivers direct qualified to the "A" final. Then the next seven fastest drivers direct qualified to the "B" final leaving the remaining ten drivers to fill the "C" final. The "C" final runs first with the top three drivers "Bumping Up" to the last three positions in the "B" final. The "B" final is then run in the same way and so we end up with our top 10 finalists, the "A" final. This method allows a driver that qualified poorly to work his way back up to higher finals (Steve Haynes took full advantage of this after a bad qualifying session).
Final qualifying results after the "C" and "B" final had been run were as follows :
  1. Ian Oddie (FG)
  2. Rik Stiles (MCD)
  3. Stevo Backland (MCD)
  4. Dave Parish (MCD)
  5. Dave Ashton (FG)
  6. Mike Humphries (FG)
  7. Ayaz Aslam (MCD)
  8. Steve Haynes (MCD)
  9. Darren Johnson (MCD)
  10. Andy Love (MCD)
The "A" Final was fiercely contested and straight from the buzzer Stevo Backland and Dave Parish caught Rik Stiles napping and jumped past him into 2nd and 3rd spot. Stevo backland then took the fight to Ian Oddie for first place and after a few laps overtook Ian for 1st place and held it for a large portion of the 30 minute final.
Further down the grid on the same lap the local "hotshot" Dave Parish was giving Rik Stiles some trouble for many laps until a few mistakes saw Rik Stiles pull away. All the while Steve Haynes was running his own race from 7th place on the grid and had sustained damage to the front right shock absorber on lap two. This didn't seem to slow him down as he soon caught Rik Stiles and took 3rd place. Rik Stiles stayed with Steve Haynes and both were catching the duelling Stevo Backland and Ian Oddie until a throttle servo failure saw Rik Stiles retire.
Stevo Backland made a small mistake allowing Ian Oddie back into the lead and Steve Haynes to move up to 2nd place. Stevo Backland then rejoined the fight but a further mistake followed by his engine stalling (and some highly questionable marshalling!) saw him loose a significant amount of time which could not be made up. The battle between Steve Haynes and Ian Oddie was quite short and sweet with these two highly skilled drivers paying maximum respect for each other resulting in a clean pass from Steve Haynes to take the lead. With a clear track ahead Steve Haynes continued to extend his lead until crossing the line as the overall winner of not only the "A" final but also the "B" and "C" final! Not a bad days work for his fist competitive drive with a stock (out the box) MCD V4 Factory Team car.
On the whole it was a great event and it is good to see that 4WD is now getting the respect it deserves as a serious racing class with a very high level of competition.
A special mention has to be made for Dave Parish and Andy love who have both significantly improved over winter and well deserved their 4th and 5th places in the A final. Well done chaps!
Also, well done to the FG Team for showing that the FG Leopard 4 Comp can mix it with the best of us. Bring on the next round
