Tamiya TCS Spec class

Morning all,

Last night's racing was great as usual, I'm sad to see the end of the indoor meets but am looking forward to outdoor in a couple of weeks.

I've only ever raced minis at Broxstowe (indoors) and I've got my car to where I want it but don't want to race it outdoors.

Chris came up with a fantastic idea last night. Replicating the Tamiya TCS Spec Class for the outdoor track.

Tamiya rules are as follows:

1. Legal chassis platforms: TT-01, TT-01R, TT-01E and TT-01R-Type E.
2. The Spec class is limited to the following option parts:

1. Plastic body CVA mini oil-filled shock set. (Any Tamiya spring may be used)
2. TT-01 aluminum center prop shaft (53620 and 54026)
3. TT-01 propeller joint cup set
4. TT-01 ball bearings (53497 and 54025)
5. TT-01 adjustable upper arm set (53674)
6. TT-01 turnbuckle steering tie-rod set (53662)
7. TT-01 carbon upper deck (53672)
8. 5mm aluminum ball connectors
9. Aluminum clamp type wheel hubs (4mm, 5mm, 6mm)
10. Metal motor mount (53666)
11. Speed tuned gear set. (53665)

1. The Kit type closed-end-bell, silver can motor (Mabuchi/Johnson) and the RS-540 / 540-J (item 54358 & 53689) are the only two motors types allowed for this class.
2. You must run kit type tires: Racing Slicks (50454), Racing Radials (50419), Racing Semi Slick Tires (50810). These are all rubber/vinyl compounds.

I reckon this would be a fantastic class to promote close racing for the more seasoned and beginner racers alike while keeping costs very low.

We can use the supplied motors and escs, all we need to do is add a bearing set and they're good to go.

Detailed Tamiya body shells and lighting kits would be encouraged for some realistic scale racing.

If there is enough interest it would be great to have a heat purely for the TCS spec class.

What are everyone elses thoughts?

I would like to see such a close class of racing, but i don't think we have enough members who would buy a TT01 just to be included in a championship!. I would suggest that the only controls you would need to enforce, is the Silver Can motor, and a plastic bathtub type chassis, and a replica bodyshell, rather than the "mazda" silhouette type body, from national touring cars. This way you would be including a lot more chassis, from varied manufacturers, like; FF03, Maverick Strada , Ansmann ARE1/2, Associated TC3/4, and Carisma models, to name but a few.

The TT01 might not be the best amongst that list, but around our tarmac track, the TT01 can use gearing that suits the circuit, and be competetive, i've done 19 laps in a race, with my own TT01, with a 27T stock motor admittedly.

Realistic touring bodies and lights deffo encouraged.
Be careful with the plastic tubs that mount the battery sideways as
they will not easily fit a modern lipo. If your lipos are square then you would need a tb01, tb02,ff03 or tt01. There are ways around this with chassis mods though.

Race either silvercan motors or the ones you are running in the minis such as hpi saturn motors etc. Realistic wheels encouraged with you choice of tyres. hop ups on these tamiya cars make little to no difference with a silvercan especially so hop away. thought we could use the 3 weeks in April with the saturday relaxed racing to come up with a few more rules. Dont want to get bogged down with rules though, just want to race on a saturday and have some fun.

Are you guys thinking of running on friday nights with this class throught the summer or just for the three saturday afternoons before we start outdoors properly ?
If you are thinking of doing them on fridays I would consider joining the tamiya class... anyone got a suitable car for sale cheap ?

Be nice to allow HPI Maverick Stada TC evo. Same basic spec. silver can motor std. £115 rrp. Would be tempted.

happy to run a Tamiya class if that's what people want. If you want it policing then you will have to sort that out amongst yourselves.
Of course all classes are welcome and nobody would be turned away.

I'm pretty sure the silver can in the maverick is a fair bit hotter than a johnson/mabuchi 27 turn silver can.

I'm about to start building my new Tamiya Chassis, I find it almost as much fun as racing them!

Guys, we have a had a Facebook group going for the past 6 month "Tamiya m class crew" the guys that sit near the door @ broxtowe .. we have been discussing this and most of us either have a Tamya Tourer or are in the midst of buying a TT01 or like ready for the out doors, so if your on Facebook and want to join let me know and Ill add you ... we a post daily and generally shoot the breeze and have a laugh ...

What motor are we going to be using with the Tamiya class?

It would be great to use the standard johnson/mabuchi 540 silver cans that come with Tamiya kits. I have one in my new kit and they can be bought off eBay, brand new, for less than £6 delivered.

I don't want to turn up with a tamiya silver can to find everyone using sport tuned/saturns,clash etc.

I agree ... but this stuff will know doubt be ironed out over the first couple of meetings ... im going to put a silver can in mine ... but may take something hotter with me just incase .. Im sure if a small sect starts running the Silver cans as sticks to it it will soon become apparent that winning on speed alone is not worth winning ... even if 4 of us are on silver cans and the rest run away with it it wont mater to me ...

Here is my effort .. TA03F kit 540 and Tyres .. some of us are going down to the outdoor track Monday @ 10am for a couple of hours to test out the Tamiya Tourers ...

Just taken it for a blast up the road fast enough for me as a beginner ... very predicatable.

Looks really good.
If I make it down on monday then I'll take a silvercan and a hpi 20turn.

Can we agree that when we say silvercan, we mean the tamiya kit motor like what Scott has used in the pic.
Lots of cars come with silvercan motors that will not be the same spec as Tamiya ones.

I'll be using the kit tyres until they wear out. After that I'll be using the cheapest rubber tyres I can find. Some cheap ansmann ones or something similar. I don't think tyres will matter a great deal running Tamiya silver cans.

Let us know how you get on tomorrow Scott. If the silver cans seem a little slow try changing pinions. A Final drive ratio of about 5.5 should do the trick. I think a 28 or 29 tooth pinion will achieve that with your ta03f. Tt01 cars need the speed tuned gear set, about a fiver so good value.

Had a great laugh today, we all had the same spec of motors and the racing and rubbing was good ... I was literally laughing as we were 3 abreast down the straight all rubbing ... my Audi body was old and brittle and literaly feel apart ...

I swapped a 10th Nascar body that will have to do until I can sort something out (its still a TA03 undernealth I promise)



Im sure the 4/5 of us will be doing the class

Hi All. For bodyshells quick see RCGeeks.co.uk they have a good selection of pre-painted touring car, and rally car bodies for around £15 posted. however, i haven't used one to know how tough/brittle they are.

Damn, you beat me to it scott, i was gonna buy the Audi too!. I'll get myself one of the Ebay shells instead, i've got a couple of weeks 'til payday, when i can afford a chassis. That will give me time to paint it.
