Tyre removal?

Im sick of buying new rims every time i need new tyres so i have got myself a 5 Litre bottle of nail varnish remover.Forgot the technical name. Are you supposed to just cut the tyres off as much as you can and then soak the wheels? For how long?
Was a nightmare getting this stuff in such big quantities because apparently this stuff was used in the London bombings.

Cut the main part of the tyre off (leaving the glued bits on) so you can remove the foam inserts. Put them in the ascertone for about 48 hours. It sometimes does it in less time when the tone is newer but Id recommend allowing 48 hours

pure acetone can be purchased from fibreglass producers for about £5 per gallon. needs special delivery due to flammable nature which usually costs £10. So £15 delivered per gallon.

pure acetone also works much quicker than diluted nail varnish.

i think a few model shops stock acetone, or a few individulas on here may sell it. they will no doubt post details for you

I get acetone from a car paint & body supply shop, about £10 per 5 litre's.
Check the yellow pages.

...or ebay for £20 delivered (5 litres). I put mine in an old 5 litre emulsion paint tin (well cleaned first). Then you can put the lid on tight and stop the damn stuff evaporating. I leave for 24 hrs, then pull the tyre bead off, then leave for a further 24hrs to get the rest of the adhesive off. The scrub in soapy water to get them nice and clean ready for more tyres....

yep pure acetone is what I use dont even need to cut the tyres off just soak and voila of they come

Or do what i do...

Put your tyres in DC's tent compartment for a night and the vapour from his mouth will de-glue the rims.

Knew that vodka had more uses than one

An alternative method is heat!!!

I have just stripped over 100 pairs of tires of rims (what a fun day that was!!) as the tires were either new or 1 run old but on older car's rims (mainly pred single point drive, Yokomo BC Special, B3 and B4 fronts ...... in case anybody is after wheels for these cars PM me!).

A simple method is to use old baking trays and an oven set to 100deg C. Leave them in there for about 10-15 minutes and they should pull off easily. The really well stuck ones might need to go back in at 120deg C.

Years ago we bought one of those burco boilers they usually use for tea/coffee making, put a buch of tyres in there and let them simmer.. dont know if the wheels would warp these days but its another option...

just a quick warning about acetone,i work with the stuff and it has to be used in a well ventilated area as it dries your lungs out after a while.

I just use the cheap nailvarnish remover from Boots, works a treat in a tubba ware box with those sealable flap things

if you are using acetone, make sure you wear goggles, rust me, you get that stuff in your eye, and you are instantly F***d to say the least. it clouds the cornea, and dont breathe it as it causes liver damage. my dad uses it at work and one of his mates is blind in one eye. its nasty stuff if u use it incorrectly.

but good stuff for what it can do

yes, open doors and windows, wear gloves as well!!!! I am a painting contractor, so know about this stuff!!!
I have 2 tupperware containers, 1 for the main soak, and 1 cleaner. After the cleaner tub gets a bit manky, I top up the main tub, and put fresh in the clean tub, works a treat, then hot soappy water, and your done. I put the whole wheel with tyre and insert in, then wash all when finished, my half worn tyres go to the newbies and youngesters at EPR!!!!!!! And you can reuse the inserts as well, bit funny how much they expand from the acetone, lol.

I take the inserts out as they absorb silly amounts of the acetone and im tight

so i save it.
