Default Round 1 Ulverston Race Report and Results

The oOple team decided that for 2018 we would spread our wings and visit some new clubs. The first of these was Ulverston Radio Car Club in the Lake District and that's where Round 1 of the popular oOoos Championship would take place.

The track at Ulverston was very well prepared by the club members lead by Paul Westwell who put some serious hours in to get the track to tip top condition.

The track is situated at the Glaxo Smith Kline Sports Club and the facilities were great with hot food, hot drinks, a bar, showers, toilets, everything a racer could need or want!

The track is all astro with quite a short pile, it has a couple of tricky jumps and a large table top in the middle. The layout was very good and challenging.

Unfortunately the weather on Saturday didn't quite play ball with a constant drizzle, mizzle, rain all day. The hot topic being whether Schumacher Silver Darts or new for 2018 Proline Pin Points would be the tyre of choice.

Some drivers chose both to test them out, some settled on Darts others Pinpoints, what was evident was that it was bl**dy slippy!

Mad Models were in attendance to supply all the tyres, foams, glue and servo tape the drivers needed and brisk trade was done all weekend.

The classes raced were 2WD, 4WD and Trucks and there were 92 entries.

Over three qualifiers on Saturday and one on Sunday it was localish lad Ian Joyner who put his car on pole for the A Main 2WD with Andy Woods in second both using Schumacher cars and Mark Smith in third for Xray.

Ian put up a great battle in round one but narrowly missed out to Mark Smith who was very consistent and he took the leg one win. with Ian in second and Chris Evison in third. In Leg two Ian had a mare and finished 10th which left Mark Smith to battle it out with Chris Evison using his PR car. Chris lead right up to the last lap but unfortunately an incident with a lapped car allowed Mark through and he wrapped up Leg two and the overall win. Leg three finally saw Ian Joyner convert his pole to a win but it was too late to stop Mark.
Overall Mark Smith won the A final, Ian Joyner was second and Chris Evison third.

The other 2WD Final Winners were:

B Final - Jim Dixon - Schumacher
C Final - Kevin Hodgkinson - PR
D Final - Scott Broadbent - Associated
E Final - Colin Kirkham - Xray
F Final - James Beech - PR.

In 4WD it would be Mark Smith again with the Xray XB4 taking pole position in the A Main with Andy Woods Schumacher second and Stephen Lawson using his Associated B64 third on the grid.
In the finals it was a demonstration run by Mark Smith winning all three legs to take the win and a clean sweep of trophies. Andy Woods came second overall with a hard charging James Pritchard moving up from 8th on the grid to take a fine third overall.

The other 4WD final winners were:

B Final - Matthew Bateson - Xray
C Final - Tim Brown - Sworx

The truck class was a battle in 4WD Short Course between Damian Whittle and Neil Burdess both running TLR SCTE 3.0 and Matt Bateson with his Durango 410 SC. Damian took pole in the A Final and won all three legs surviving massive pressure from Neil and latterly Matt who unfortunately had both transponder and motor issues. This meant that Damian won overall with Neil second and Danny James third (as his transponder actually counted!)

In 2WD Stadium truck it was Colin Kirkham battling his son Oliver and Mike Bradbury, Colin ensured the victory was complete by winning all thre legs.

Well done to all the drivers!

Thanks to our sponsors, Schumacher, CML/Proline, Inside Line Racing, Mad Models, Dremel, RPRC/Tekno.

Cheers to the oOple Team for putting another great event on.

Finally thanks to Paul Westwell, Stu Jones, Emily Bispham and the rest of the Ulverston Radio Car Club for hosting a great meeting and supplying a fantastic track!
