Default 2013 AYK BOOST vintage racer RE-build

It's been a good while since this car has seen any action. This car is an ongoing build in progress and after it's last (and first) run I worked out a few areas that needed more attention.
This car was pulled down more than 12 months ago with the intent to rebuild it and for me to address some areas that required a little more attention. This car was never destined for the shelf as a display only car so it needs to be functional. I'm a huge fan of the box art Boost and I wanted to keep as faithful to the cars original look as possible. No modern day shocks, no modern day arms and no modern day wheels. Ok, so the car will be wearing 2.2" modern rubber for the race track so I had to adopt some Yoke style 2.2" wheels as these were around when the car was on the market.
Last time this car saw the light of day all the parts were cleaned and all the metal parts treated to an INOX bath ready for it's rebuild. Until now everything was packed tightly into the kit box but for now it's time to let the parts breath once again.

In the beginning I started with a selection of spares that my good friend Rob (BULLFROG) supplied me. Basically I pieced this car together over time and even borrowed a RACE PREP saddle pack chassis plate from a friend overseas so that I could have it drawn up in a CAD file along with all the other plate work. I had the files modified to suit the needs I had for this car so I dropped the 7th cell from the lower plate plus a few other odds and ends.
From here my good friend Antony from Melbourne helped me out by cutting some fibreglass sheet using the files. Two 1.6mm sheets were glued, pressed and left over night before being cut the following day.
Here's are some pics taken as they were being cut...

Hi Jason,
I,m following this build as I would like to get my Pro Radiant up and running, like you I have made a race prep copy lower chassis.
The drive shafts that are in the photo,s are they Yokomo?
If so what length have you made them and how have you joined them together

Wow what a nice workshop!!! The stick radios, the Le Mans motor stack, etc... Feels like a really cool place you got there for your R/C!!!
Also like to add that paint scheme is awesome, really love it.
Keep the pics comming!

Jason,

Looks like another envious build...

I restored a AYK radiant, but ran into problems with the stock shocks which keep leaking. Reading about this, I now understand is a recognised problem. I'm replacing mine with Kyosho golds.

Will you replace the shocks if you run?

Back when the car was first built and sporting the kit 2.0" wheels and old skool rubber.

Then I trialled a WASP slipper system with some success. Also a keen eye might spot Schumacher Bosscat ball raced alloy steering levers to replace the fragile plastic assembly.

Then customised Yokomo driveshaft and drive hub assemblies with thanks to my friend Thomas (BUGLE)

Here are some of the few pics I have of the car either on the track or in action.

Default Back ground to the Boost

My first real knowledge of the AYK Boost was from the Pro Radiant. Mike Dunn had entered his Pro Radiant (wearing a BOOST shell) in the 1989 IFMAR 'worlds' here in Australia. His car stood out from the pack with its bright blue, orange with black and white chequers. Infact back then we used to have a popular TV sports show called THE WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS on channel 9. Mike's car was used in a promo of the event and was set up with a tiny camera to record images of the action out on the track.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw0KG4xJ6_M

In the beginning AYK released the original RADIANT (rear motor) and from there what I can work out is Mike and Steve Dunn created a hybrid mid motored car which would be the evolutionary step to the Pro Radiant and Boost. New chassis platework had been designed to move the motor from the rear of the Radiant and relocate it to a mid mount configuration. The original front gearbox housing carried over as did the suspension arms, diffs, hubs, wheels etc... The old Radiant shocks were rubbish and new prepium alloy bodied dampers were used.

I'm far from an expert on this but what I have heard was that Team RACE PREP had the pro Radiant as there own to market (US market I would guess) and the AYK company had their version of the same car with some slight variations which they marketed as the BOOST. The only real changes was obviously the lexan body, wheel colour, front shock tower and tyres (please correct me if I am wrong).

From here Team RACE PREP designed and marketed their own brand of parts to hop up the Pro Radiant which included items such as a saddle pack chassis, 48dp spur hub mount and many other odds and ends to create and even more reliable and competitive car.
