Default Quad Nightmares....

Had the mother of all weekends.
Thanks to Neal for answering lots of questions

Built my 550 with Naza V2 & Gps - with afro esc's and Sunnysky motors + tarot Gimbal.

Checked it all over and plugged in the power .... Smoke

Quickly unplugged it - bottom board had fried. Quad totally dead.
Then I saw the problem. The power wires (HX something or other) - although red to positive / black to neg were wrong in that I should have had an opposite connector so it married up. It looked right - but was reversed

Changed it - still all dead. Tried Naza on its own and seemed ok - phew.
Voltmeter on the quad bottom distribution board showed it was dead - looks like it blew and saved the rest of the electronics.

So - as I needed to help a friend do some filming on Sunday in Sheffield I decided to put the Naza into my spare 450 frame. Got it all sorted (eventually) and it flew great with good gps lock - so I felt confident taking it to Sheffield to fly from a building roof terrace to help with my friends short film.

A few good flight at home under my belt - I set off to Sheffield.

On the filming set - I powered up and waited for warm up and green light, then went to take off. The quad flipped over straight away, smashed a carbon prop and went crazy upside down until I unplugged it. Flummoxed - I put on another prop and tried again - seemed ok and managed to film the bits for my mate.

Properly stressed with it all though.
No idea why it flipped on take off and went bonkers.

Dji 550 kit ordered to replace my burnt out Hobbyking 550.

Bloody nightmare.

Still haven't dared try 'return to home......'

Oh dear! You should be fine with dji frame.
Did you wait until the rapid blinking green LEDs before take off?
Did you move or pick up the quad before rapid green LEDs?

A tip from a friend of mine.. Make sure the return to home is setto give you enough height to clear anything around you! His lost signal on a golf course tried to return itself but found a tree instead!
He was flying FPV and had no idea where it had gone but was lucky he heard it falling through the tree!

Yes - waited for all greens and didn't move it.

The only thing I recall is applying the throttle quickly as I wanted it to go up smoothly as there wasn't much space.

It all happened in the blink of an eye, quad just went over onto its back / side and I unplugged it as it obviously went crazy upside down

My first Quad flight started with a massive flip, it threw itself on its back violently.
Turns out the motors were in the wrong number order. M1, id called top left then rotated clockwise. M1 should be top right, then rotated anti clockwise. Also M1 should rotate anticlockwise, then alternate around.

Sorry to hear you flipped it Andy.

Check this guide to confirm you have the motors hooked up correctly:

M1-M4 in order on front of Naza, mounted facing forwards.

Be sure to do an Advanced IMU calibration after the hard crash.

Hi Sherbs.

I'd flown it a few times the same morning - all motors / props correct etc. It was I guess kind of like, as I throttled up for take off - it was out of balance, so tipped over - maybe the Naza didn't react quickly enough - or I tried to take off too quickly?

Anyway - replaced broken carbon prop and it flew ok - Weird and worrying?

Neal - those bloody lights are confusing !!

When I power it on (in Atti mode) I get a yellow flash and 3 red flashes.
Then wait a bit and after a while it changes to yellow with 2 red flashes.
More waiting - then yellow and 1 red flash
Then finally all yellows, followed by a burst of greens.
Then I take off - I assume:

When the reds have gone and it's all yellows - it's warmed up
After warm up - the burst of greens means - home point set

Is this right ?

yes you are nearly correct, it records home point as soon as you start motors (diagnal stick input).The led's are telling you how many satelites have been locked onto with the gps.
1x red= 6 sats
no red= more than 6 (7 or more)
if you had it in gps mode the led would be green instead of orange.

i Have still flown with one red led, once up in the air it will go full green, it still records home point but not quite as accurate as no reds!

Same light sequence as the phantom , do you have to turn your quad around whilst holding it on two different axis to set a "new" home point if you're flying in a different area than usual ??

I wondered that too (compass spinny thing) as I had flown it fine at home - then took it to Sheffield and it flipped on take off?

All that does is recalibrates the compass, if you traveled to a different country, then yes you would need to do that.

Fair point , it's just habit for me now I always re calibrate when I go flying anywhere !

Reassures me that is not going to "do one " into the upper atmosphere never to be seen again !

As far as im aware, the "Naza Dance" allows the compass to recognize the difference between metallic/magnetic items on the craft in relationship the the earths magnetic field.
