Default Clicking Layshaft

After sunday i found i had a clicking layshaft.

First i thought it may be coming from diff, but checked that, then though it may have been the bearings, so replaced them.

I have no idea what it is.

Anyone?

Matt

Have you got the front diff set high? and more than 2mm washers on the front inner ball stud? If so it could be the T part of the drive shafts (inside the outdrives) slightly catching on the ball cups.

diffs set low, with belts under med tension.

I'm positive its coming from the rear layshaft

If you take the pinion off the motor and then remove the idler gear you should be able to trace where its coming from. Check the idler gear and layshaft gear too.

Right, my mistake, i'm getting the layshaft and rear idler mixed up

its the rear idler that seems to be clicking.
Car is stripped.

All thst is connected is rear diff and rear idler with pulleys.

When i turn the rear idler by hand, it doesnt click.
But when i turn it by the outdrives on the diff it clicks?!?!?!?

Tried different diff heights and belt tension and its still the same

ok, diff is like butter and doesnt make the noise when belt is removed.

Rear idler is clicking when not attached to diff when i use the belt to turn the idler(if that makes any sense at all?).

I'm starting to think ignore it.

It cant be anything serious, i mean the rear idler is hardly going to fail is it?

well all it can be now is something stuck in the belt or pulley,or a dodgy idler bearing

Check that the idler pulley is on the correct way around!

I bought a Cat sx off this forum and it had a clicking noise from the rear idler. It turned out that the pulley that the long drive belt goes onto was fitted onto the shaft the wrong way around which made it catch the alloy housing causing the clicks!

Well, since i posted about it the car has been fully built with electrics installed.

You dont hear the click over the motor/spur gear.

I did check everyones suggestions - and thank you- and i have put it down to the poor molding on the pulleys. it must be slightly catching on the bulkheads.

I have tried removing most of the flashing, but thats all i can think it being.

Thanks again for all your help and if i finally get to the bottom of it i will post up for everyones info.

Matt 'clickety click' Haskell

Is it the same problem as your front pulley? You know the one that was sliced in half by the loose screw?
