I had a customer ask for a shell this week with the only instructions being to do "Something Bright Please".

This will teach him

Again I still can't seem to photograph fluros properly yet - this is MUCH brighter in real life.

Sorry, I didnt repond to your other one! Fluo is hard to be honest rob - you either photograph it so you can see it - in which case it looks dull and not fluorescent. Or you photograph it and it is all blown out.

Nice job, definately could of been brighter though... fluro green fade on the green, heehee....

Need a good light source for taking pics of fluro, the only down side, is if you use a flash, it brightens it all up, not just the fluro.

Nice work rob, Do you cut your own masks or used pre cut ones?

What sorta knife do you guys use to cut on the shell? (not cut the shell out, cut masking whilst on the shell) because I find it hard to manouver the swann morton scalpel with accuracy.

I recently bought a vinyl cutter (ouch expensive) and design the masks on the PC. All the lettering is done on the PC and then masks cut and the logos etc painted on.

This was my first try with Faskolor - my tip is DON'T let this stuff dry in the brush for even one minute

PS - I loved the James Bond shell in this month's RRCi Terry

I think cutting the design on the shell could be easier sometimes but I don't do it that way. When I do have to cut on the shell I use a normal Swan Morton knife (no 11 blade) and move the shell around to get a good angle and swear a lot

If normal swear words don't do the job try adding 2 or 3 together to make a new, longer swear word - this technique works well for me

Being a pauper, I cut on the shell, you need a craft handle, not a scalple handle (you ever seen surgeons giving someone a tribal flame type incision heehee) and a number 2 Swann Morton craft blade.

Blades are crap but i use No.11 scalpal blades in them.

The handles are rounded and easier to hold and manuevour. Was gonna cut 1 of the handles in half for inside the shell on buggy shells.

I use a handle similar to the middle one with a curved blade, means on gentle curves you can use a curved part of the blade and gives smoother lines, and then the point for doing intricate stuff.

so what do you guy's use to cut out the shells? knife or curved scissors?

The best way I have found to photograph fluorescent paint is to create a Tone Mapped HDR Image.

I will post an example later.... It may then make sense

Pro... far from it...... lol

Cutting out, I use a small stanley knife for the majority of stuff, using scissors to split corners, and a dremmel with a sanding drum for rounding corners and wheel arches if they need 'fettling' but most often, I only ever cut my own shells out, I don't offer a trimming service.

I decided to call the basic design 'Tribal Thorn' but this colour combination is now officially known as 'Frog Guts'

I use the knife with the big red handle for EVERYTHING!
just find that its easier to handle. I never bother changing the blade either, I just re-sharpen it.

Thanks rob, I quite enjoyed doing that shell too, all the women on it were all hand cut. I used to use the plotter at work for doing stuff for masks, but I no longer have access to it now that i dont work there. so everythings hand cut. even wording etc.

I find that cutting the designs on the shell is quicker for me. By the time I've designed it all on the computer and then cut it out I could have done it all on the shell already. Its more convenient to use a plotter if you want to do various shells with the same design though.

Just as a quickie i noticed this , this morn for those that havnt got or cant afford a dremel.

Argos have got this reduced from £60 down to £20 and looks like a good alternative ! + it comes in a case with tools.
