Default Aluminium Sheet 7075 or.....

Looking to source some aluminium to make a car chassis. Been advised 7075 in a 2.5mm although getting hold of this seems almost impossible in a small 390mm x 100mm piece.

Advice please, do i really need 7075, need a couple of bends to put into the sheet 25 deg. If not 7075 what grade would you aim to obtain, any tips on where to get it from?

Many thanks.

I've used this for chassis .. needs cutting for the flat bit and would probably require heating to bend it but other than that its very tough which can't be said for some of the ali sheet on ebay !!

The 0.9" stuff makes a good chassis but it's about as rare as hen's teeth.

In the US it is practically a supermarket item but over here the only people who have it want to sell a whole sheet. That's a hell of a lot of chassis!

I may be able to lay hands on some 0.9" thick 7075T6 if enough people are interested.

Chassis blanks may be in the order of £20. Depends on postage and how much I have to buy.

Found out the hard way by phoning around that 7075 is just not available other than in a huge sheet.....
Can you advise on thoughts about using 6082 or alternatively 5083 in a 3mm thickness for a straight forward chassis with small kick which are less than 25 degrees. Holes would be drilled and countersunk.
Thanks

Hi Mike,

It would work and be strong enough but may be too stiff. I can't find my material data files at the minute but I would expect that Young's Modulous would be similar, it's just that 7075 takes more stress before it takes a permanent set.

Might be a tad heavy too.

Thanks for your response, I found that 7075 is also a bu**er to laser cut.
I've got some made up now and they are perfect. Thanks all for input and assistance.

As I understand it you don't try to laser cut aluminium because it reflects the beam. Waterjet works well or milling.

Glad to hear that you are sorted.

you can laser cut aluminum Our local laser shop has a 4000w laser that'll do 3/8" aluminum, and cheaper then water jet.
