I'm ordering 511 diff covers from Fred either today or tomorrow.
I have two DB01 gear diff units coming back with a Japanese friend of mine from Japan. He's leaving for Japan on Friday so I gave him some money and a list of Tamiya 511 parts I'm having trouble finding, including aluminum shock tower bushings, Ver. 1 body, lowered wing, and 2 gear diff units.

I'll let you guys know how the Alaste diff covers fit with the DB01 gear diffs, in fact, I think I might even do a build thread. I have alot of hop ups that are going into the 511 right out of box. It should be a fun project to do. I'll keep you guys posted. I dont expect my friend back from Japan for about 10 days so the build wont start just yet. I have a hard time finding time to build. I think I probably wont do the build until the Holidays so I can take my time with it. I'll keep you guys posted as soon as I start, but dont hold your breath. It probably wont be until around Christmas that I start, so if anybody wants or can do a post about this topic before then, by all means please post your experience. Otherwise, you can wait for me to test the diff covers with the gear diff units during Christmas time.

99% of the parts anyone is likely to need are available without too much searching. Even the front hexes that nobody can allegedly find. Just need to know where to look.

Only parts that are special order are the top decks, chassis and the aluminium gearbox tops/bottoms

rcLazy.com will have the new gear diff units in stock early next week, along with 511 shells and loads of other new parts.

I'm sure our team drivers will be happy to check the diff covers fit with the new gear diffs.

Cheers

Mark

Wishbones, hub carriers, shock towers and shock X parts id say are the essential spares to carry with you.

We carry all of these and more in stock at www.JTmodels.co.uk.

If you need any help feel free to p.m me.

I just had a quick look at my TRF417 gear diff and it looks like it will fit in the 501 gear cover. I cant be 100% as I just placed it over the diff whilst it was mounted in the 417, but it looks like it can fit.

I wont be that bothered, the covers are to keep the ball diff away from debris, the gear diff is sealed anyway.

Diff covers main function is actually to protect drive belt and pulley, not diff internal parts. When driving on loose surfaces with small stones/gravel you will otherwise damage drive belt and pulley. They get stuck between rear suspension mount and pulley.

Rear Diff Cover fits over the Spec.R Diff (TA05), but that requires a couple of shims each side to remove the slack. Not exactly what was asked, but might be useful...

The main purpose of having the diff covers is to keep small stones and pebbles from jumping into the diff housing as that would chip or strip your diff's main outer gear as well as wreak havock on your belt. As the 511 was originally designed, the outer gear of the diff is the only part of the diff that is exposed on top by the uncovered diff housing. The internal gears (or balls and washers on the ball diff) are all pretty much sealed away from the outer elements. I have no honest answer for why the hell the designers at Tamiya designed the 511 with exposed diffs. It makes no sense to me, but thank God for Fred coming to our rescue.
