Default Rear wheel axle shims, outside or inside?

According the 502X and 511 manual the wheel axle shims should be mounted on the inside of the upright. The 201, B44.1 and DEX410 manuals advise to put the shims on the outside of the upright. Putting it on the outside makes the car 2mm wider. What's the prefered solution?

If you dont put any shims inside of the upright, driveshaft pops out from the diff outdrive easily. I used 1,5mm shim inside on my 511 to be sure that driveshaft stays in the outdrive.
