are all 17.5t brushless motors equal?
might sound a silly question but Im just wondering if for they are all basically the same but with different branding and pricing, surely if they same winds/kv rating and getting same voltage then they shouldnt differ, or do they?
I currently race with 17.5t in blinky using a turnigy trackstar motor, it seems to work fine and I have no problems with it, but do notice that others are that in my opinion noticably quicker, obviously I know driving comes into it a huge amount, but it made me wonder if a fancy branded expensive motor would in fact be quicker? but that defeats the point of the 17.5t limit? sorry for my rambling but as a newbie to brushless Im still learning

No. Not all 17.5t motors are equal. You may be better off searching on rctech forum because they are mainly American on there and the yanks love their 17.5t stock class. Hope that helps

17.5 Brushless Motors
In US, they are huge on this type of racing.
They talk about weight of the car, transmission mods(slipper eliminators, cut gears, ceramic bearings and more), short stack motors, temp of the motor after the run, how much timing they have on the motor, the IR(internal resistance) of the cells they use. There are also some specialist companies that only deal in this type of motor. But as per previous post look on rctech for maybe some advice. But they pour lots and lots of money into the cars to get that extra edge. There 2wd buggies can be something eye watering in costs.

The theory behind a motor design is the same but some are lighter and have more air flow, all things that help to keep a motor consistent and cool through a run.
Each motor including yours will have a maximum/optimum operating range which could be different from track to track. Eg I like the Gforce 17.5 motor for small/med indoor blinky TC with 4-4.5 FDR and 40* timing (any less FDR or higher timing just makes heat not performance.) Other makes can go lower FDR and higher timing without compromise, Trinity for example are designing their motors for this application but are premium cost. |

17.5 t is large in uk my club really only runs this class and the brca Clubmans is run because there was no 17.5 at two day brca nationals
There is very big differences in the motors and nearly every company make a stock class motor made slightly different for the mod turn motors Best ones I have seen are 24k trinity Maxllia from trinity Speed passion v4 G-forces new red can motor Budget team wave And there will always be difference in motors they try to push each new model to be little bit faster. it will always be like this unless u run a hand out esc and motor but then some one will have better batteries servo handset more tyres and this go for any scale any class u run Ur motor is a cheap version of a reedy sonic one but with normal bearing not the expensive free running ones that are in the reedy so ur motor unless it one of the better ones won't hit the same Kev and rpm as the sonic does Last edited by tcboy1983; 22-04-2016 at 07:23 AM. |

ok thanks guys, maybe then its time to hit the web and do some shopping for a better quality motor.
the turnigy stuff works fine and has done its job of getting me started on a budget, but now I need more

The fastest motor I find is the 24k the fast guys in 17.5 run them at my local track
Also 17.5t at btcc last weekend was won by a 24k ( from my local track ) which ever motor u buy to get the best out of it u need to put it on a motor tuner and u need it pulling 6-7amps on a lipo charged to 8 volts any more ur just making heat any less you will be left on the straight also if u can get each phase on the sensor to read 52 deg then you have a good motor it here is 10 deg difference u need to shim or new sensor board or worse stator after this u just adjust gearing |

This is the team wave good all rounder on a budget but notice 1700rpm down (slower top end) and 230ish down on Kv ( less torque) there is a difference

Kv is simply RPM / voltage. It's no measurement of torque. This type of motor checker has very little value in determining torque, as it has no load to place on the motor.

Team Powers 17.5 actinium with the optional rotor is a win win. High rpm with high torque and really low temps. Last year without the optional rotor mine was a dream, smooth and really quick. Never think I needed more motor to be competitive.

turnigy trackstar 17.5T max timing on the can, 1.6A LOL
tried with 2 batterys and 2 dvm and same result soldered a trinity killshot 17.5 in place and with 40 degree on the can marking it gave similar 1.6 to 1.8A, knocked it up to 65 degree and now its pulling 5.95A

just modified the sensor board of the trackstar, now have far more timing LOL
will test it again when I get time and see if its happy tweaked to 55 ish degree and 6A like the trinity, no wonder it was bit slower but always so cool at end of run compared to others, the motor was hardly working

the trackstar motor is about £25 quid but can only be advanced to 40 degree, that was drawing 1.6A opened the motor up and found that the timing was limited physically by the shape of the alloy bit inside, 3 seconds on sanding belt and they gone, so now timing is infinite going by the markings its now at an estimated 55 degrees but puling 6.2A free revving is that what you wanted to know? motor ran cool and fine for my racing, best £25 quid I spent LOL just in case you think Im cheating or something, then I thought I would add that I run in the RC bikes section, we dont follow BRCA EB regs stock is zero timing on ESC but any 17.5t motor I have some photos of what I did but no idea how to put on here
