Yokomo big-bore on X-6sq
I’ve been messing about using the big-bore shocks on my X-6 on a slippery clay track. Started with the shocks with original pistons and springs and filled them with 25wt oil.
Mounting: - Lengths are pretty much the same as AE shocks - Rear: no issues, they even fit nicely on the AE shock bushings - Front: use some of the trannyheight shims to move the front shocktower a bit more forward to make room for the bigger shock diameter, and narrow the Yokomo pivot ball so it fits in the front arms. They feel pretty save out of the box but they lacked grip compared to the AE shocks I normally use. So I 1st changed to the softer orange springs, which already helped, but still the car felt to “skatey” to what I wanted to have. So I drilled the rear pistons to 1,2 mm and filled them with 30wt oil. They rear felt a lot more active now, and acceleration was a lot better, even able to pull wheelies again and sideway stability had also improved since the car was now under steering, while it was balanced before. ( I left the front pistons and oil as they were, to compare / feel the difference ). My only real gripe now is that even the soft orange springs are pretty hard, so I wanted to have softer springs. I 1st wanted to have softer springs made, but that would be a bit expensive. Since a minimum batch its 50 springs ( 25 sets). We tried Losi springs before and they were binding slightly and they were to long, so I’ve been manipulating them a bit to fit. But haven’t tested these yet. |

I've been using the big bores on my X-6 for a few weeks now. I ended up using the white pistons front & rear with 27.5wt in the front and 30wt in the rear (Losi oil). Springs are orange front & rear as well. I agree, the orange springs are still a little too stiff for the front and the length of them makes it hard to get the correct ride height without having play in the spring & cup. Thanks for the tip on the losi springs. I'll give them a try this week.
